Bone & Muscle problems

Hello, I am looking to consult for my father in law who's 64y old and feeling mild pain in the lower back every time and after hectic work like climbing stairs alone carrying a child, it pains more with radiating pain in the left leg alone. No issues while walking or any other activities. This is happening since 6 months but it has increased recently. Can someone suggest what would be the next step for diagnose the issue and remedy?

I've been having back pain , and Dr said me that to take a MRI Scan but I am confused that it is better to take MRI without eating food
