Splint and braces for tmj treatment

How can I say by externally or internally whether my treatment (which is going on) for tmj disorder by splint and braces is improving my tmj problem or not? Can splint cause any worse side effects if I use it for long time? Please please please help me with best possible information.

My mouth is not opening properly due to habit of chewing panmasala and gutkha. i quit my habit but my mouth is still not opening more than 3-4 cm. It hurts when I try to open it. I need any suggestion first then i will visit to dentist... Dan I cure it at home by any antioxidant and mouth workout?
