Adult strabismus

I have strabismus since childhood now I'm 26.i can align straight my both eyes for some minutes by forcing medial muscles of both eye without diplopia. I want to have a surgery but when i consulted a specialist he told me,"I can do full correction because of your positive post-op diplopia test.if i do,you'll have diplopia for rest of your life." I don't know how I'll have diplopia after surgery even when i can align both eyes straight forcefully without diplopia before surgery.
