Sleep issue in baby

Our 18 month old baby has trouble sleeping independently. We still have to keep her in our lap and pat on her head to make her sleep everyday every time. We used to make her sleep this way since Always and she got so used to it that now she's unable to sleep independently no matter how tired or sleepy she is . She gets cranky if we try anything new. Pl guide as to how to approach this issue as we are worried she would never get out of the comfort zone.
