Foul smell from mouth in morning

My son is 4 years 8 moths old. We have noticed that while brushing in morning, he is having foul smell coming from mouth. He brushes twice. He does not have gastric problem and stool motion is normal. He is cavity problem. Can this foul smell be due to cavity or due to gum problem. Any gel to be applied for gum area? Pl advice.
