I was watching TV and I coughed out something that looked like a tiny black lentil seed. I curioisly picked it up, it was squishy little mucus but covered in blood. It didn't spill or make any mess. It was solid, and seemed rotten blood clot. It was just one time. Is it normal or is it a warning for something serious?

I had been smoking for past 2 years. I had a severe cold few days back, so i quit smoking. Now i continuously coughing for few days. Is it quite normal to have mucus (changed from yellow to white) in it. I have been doing gargling and hot water breathing for soothing my throat.
