Cancer Care and Treatment

I have this ulcer/lump on top of left side of my tongue for last 3 weeks. Earlier I had 3 lumps white in colour but now only one is there. I tried ulcer medicine but I couldn't get rid of it. Now I'm tense it could be early sign of cancer.

I just had a general inquiry and was wondering for what reason would someone be requested to have a cancer screening done? My friend that i care about a lot is having one and i dont know why? She is 16 if that helps in any way. Did the hospital ask her to have it done and if yes then what would the possible reasons be?
