Thyroplasty

Thyroplasty is an operation on the upper airway to improve voice quality in patients with unilateral vocal cord paralysis. Type 1 thyroplasty, that is the medialization laryngoplasty, was first described by Isshiki in 1974 and has become popular since the late 1980s. In medialisation laryngoplasty, a window is cut in the thyroid lamina in the neck on the paralysed side and the piece of thyroid cartilage is depressed inward towards the midline until the normal cord touches the paralysed cord, thus closing the glottic gap resulting in normal voice.
