While most discharge is normal and can reflect the various stages of the menstrual cycle, some discharge can be a result of an infection such as a sexually transmitted disease. The most common form of vaginal infection that is widely known as vulvovaginal candidiasis was first described in 1849 by Wilkinson. A complicated vaginal discharge infection is treated by an injection of ceftriaxone intramuscularly or by oral cefixime.
