India is home to the highest number of blind people, both reversible blindness from cataracts and irreversible blindness from Glaucoma, Diabetes, Macular Degeneration and Ocular Infections. As per the published data, it has been estimated that India needs 25,000 Ophthalmologists by 2020 to achieve the goals of VISION 2020: The Right to Sight (a joint program of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).It is seen that India will need 300 new residents to graduate every year to help meet the growing demands of an aging population. Our Institute’s main goal is to establish a world class training facility while delivering quality care to the local community. We plan to enroll residents every year into fellowship programs that focus on Glaucoma, the Cornea, the Retina and comprehensive Ophthalmology.These programs will give doctors a chance to train while using world class equipment and learn from the experience of the faculty here. By establishing a structured residency program, AEI will train future Ophthalmologists to address the growing burden of blindness and other vision-related disorders. With this training program under the supervision of senior doctors, we hope to expand and improve the delivery of quality eye care to all sections of the Indian population.
