Normally gastritis gets corrected after taking ppi for around 15 days if the patient is not taking any other medicines such as antihypertensive or pain killers. On the absence of taking such medicines persistent gastritis may be due to H.pylorie infection,a bacteria which infect the inner lining of the stomach..I may suggest to do an endoscopy and do a card test for h.pylorie(the gastroenterologist who does the endoscopy generally also do  the card test)..if comes positive take medicine for h.pylorie and your gastritis will get eventually corrected.      Uptill now according to my knowledge there are no major adverse effect of taking ppi  for a prolonged period.

Taking PPI for long time if it is not indicated like for barrette esophagus etc will cause certain issues related to loss of calcium and other minerals. So you should not take it on regular basis
Next Steps
You need to tested for H pylori infection as it might be a case of bacterial gastritis

It will cause indigestion, malabsorption, anemia, resistance if taken for the long term.
Next Steps
I would like to know more detailed history about your symptoms to suggest something. if PPI and lifestyle changes don't help you after a long duration of treatment. I advise you to go for upper GI endoscopy. since it's a bit painful procedure I advise u to do it if only medical treatment fails.
Health Tips
there is some alternative medication that can help your condition. Reach for alternative medication.

Dnt worry. Long term use may cause minor digestive issues along with Vit B 12 deficiency which again needs to be supplemented. So instead of taking more medicines for the sake of one medicine you can go for other solutions. If they dnt work, then continue with PPI

You should only take it for a month or two at a stretch as long term use slowly damages the wall of your gastrointestinal tract causing a different form of gastritis called atrophic gastritis which may inturn lead to more severe complications like Gastric carcinomas.

PPIs are not the only solution to your problem. Since you are giving a long history, looks like chronic gastritis due to an infection (very common). If not infection, we will have to look into other causes that are producing more acid in your stomach. Please connect for a better understanding of your disease and treatment.

Hello, lifestyle modification is always preferred before medications! Which includes having plenty fluids, not sleeping right after dinner or lunch, less spicy food, and exercise or walk for 20-30 mins daily! PPI does have long term side effects so rather than having self medications, have a visit to doctor(gastroenterologist)
Next Steps
Visit gastro Endoscopy can be done if required
Health Tips
Avoid spicy food Avoid sleeping right after meals Avoid overeating Exercise or walk daily for 20-40mins
