Platelets and WBC count differ
Hello sir/madam, My mother had a fever and the doctor asked to take blood tests and in that test, the platelet count was 2.8 lakhs/cumm and WBC were 8600 cells/cumm and asked to take antibiotics and few infection medicines for fever and we started to take those which is just yesterday but today we went to diagnostic center for taking the tests again and in that report the platelet count was 1.81 lakhs/cumm and WBC are 4900 cells/cumm. Though it was in the normal range I wanted to check if this is normal as both platelets count and wbc  Count decreased. Please help me fastly as I am having fear whether the counts are decreasing.

Although it may be due to different labs having different machines but it’s better to repeat it again after two days and see the trend. Also you can get a peripheral smear made which leads to manual calculation to see whether both counts are adequate.

**Opinion:** The drop in both platelet count and WBC count that you've noticed after starting antibiotics and other medications for your mother's fever is understandable and can be concerning. However, it's important to note that fluctuations in blood counts can occur due to several reasons, including the body’s natural response to infection, medications, or even lab variability. While the counts have decreased, they are still within normal ranges, which is reassuring. The reduction may reflect the body's immune response to the infection and the effectiveness of the treatment in reducing the overall inflammatory state. **Next Steps:** 1. **Continue Monitoring:** It’s crucial to keep monitoring your mother's blood counts to observe any further changes. Repeating the tests in a few days will provide more clarity on whether the trend is continuing or stabilizing. 2. **Follow the Treatment Plan:** Continue with the prescribed antibiotics and infection-related medications. Ensure that your mother stays well-hydrated and gets adequate rest to support her recovery. 3. **Report Any New Symptoms:** If your mother develops new symptoms, such as increased weakness, bruising, or bleeding, or if the fever persists, it's important to contact the healthcare provider immediately. 4. **Follow-up Consultation:** I recommend scheduling a follow-up consultation with me or your primary healthcare provider to review the test results, monitor progress, and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan. This will ensure that your mother is recovering well and that there are no complications. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for further clarification or if you have any additional concerns. It's important to address any worries promptly to ensure your mother’s health and peace of mind.

It looks as if you got the tests done from different Laboratories. The WBC count Platelets count can't fall by 40%  within 24 hours however strong the medicine might be. But since all the parameters done so far are within normal limits there is no cause for worry. Please continue with the medicine. If she becomes afebrile  then it is all right.  Otherwise you will have to get some more tests done.
