Yoga is something many of us are into or have tried it at some point in our lives. But there are yet a good number of people who are new to this or haven’t yet given in to this form of discipline. And hence we decided to answer all questions that a beginner in yoga might have.

What is yoga?

The practice of Yoga is older than we count, and the discipline has been passed down by the Yogis since then. The word literally means ’union’.  It is a form of discipline or practice that aims to achieve liberation by uniting the mind, body and soul.

Is Yoga only about the ‘asanas’?

No, it’s not. For most of us, Yoga means asanas or a form of physical activity. Asana is just one aspect of Yoga, but yoga has a lot more to offer and also, one cannot directly start with asanas.

What is Om?

Om is a rhythmic vibration which is said to be the universe’s sound as it is constantly moving. Om is a mantra which is chanted at the beginning and end of every yoga session. It helps us in connecting better with the universe and uplifts our mood and energy levels.

Are there any types of Yoga?

Yes there are various types of yoga that exist and it is essential to choose which one fits you the best. Below listed are some popularvtypes of yoga:

  • Hatha Yoga
  • Ashtanga Yoga
  • Kripalu Yoga
  • Power Yoga
  • Hot Yoga
  • Iyengar Yoga
  • Kundalini Yoga
  • Vini Yoga

Can I lose weight with Yoga?

It is important to understand that when there is a negative energy balance i.e.  when energy expenditure is more than energy intake, weight loss occurs. Regularly practicing yoga can influence weight loss. But, thinking of it as a weight loss mechanism is not ideal.

The more often you do it, the more benefits will you experience it. Practicing Yoga for 1-2 times a week for one hour each will help you reap the benefits of it.

Why should I indulge in Yoga?

Well it’s not only us who recommends Yoga but also India's Prime Minister, Shri Narender Modi who emphasizes on making Yoga an integral part of our lives because of its tremendous benefits. Yoga helps us in improving our oxygen uptake and harnessing better energy. It also helps in reducing stress levels and hence improves heart health.

In conclusion, Yoga is one of the most non-expensive form of activity and can be done anyone and by everyone. We highly recommend each of you to make it a part of your lives.
