These two words are mistakenly and widely used interchangeably. As a matter of fact, they are not very similar to each other.

With over 8 years of professional experience in Graphology, I can confidently say that these two personality traits are independent of each other and 4 different combinations of these traits can occur.

1. High Self-Esteem and High Self-Confidence

2. High Self-Confidence and Low Self-Esteem

3. High Self-Esteem and Low Self-Confidence

4. Low Self-Confidence and Low Self-Esteem

What is Self-Esteem?

In simple words, It is an estimation of oneself! An evaluation that we do on ourselves sub-consciously with or without our strengths and skills are taken into consideration. It is the way we look at ourselves; whether we look up or look down upon ourselves. It does not have to be based on our abilities. It can always feed on them but can never be the sole cause.

What is Self-Confidence?

It is a belief in one's abilities, skills, and strengths. It acts as an assistant to the Self-Esteem.

So what contributes to Self-Esteem? Can one have a High Self-Esteem without any notable skill or strength? Yes, definitely!

The Self-Esteem feeds heavily on Environmental factors i.e. your social circles, your family/relative circles. The way you are treated and looked upon by people in these circles have a huge bearing on your self-worth. Of course, any added skillset or strength is always more fuel for Self-Esteem.

Once again, we reach the gates of an important question about self-confidence. Who decides whether strength is truly a strength? Who decides whether a skill is truly a skill? Environmental factors (Or surroundings) matter once again.
