Perk Up With Cosmetic Dentistry

Dr. Amit Berani, Dentist
Dentistry is no longer just filling or tooth extraction; rather it has become more than just that. Broken, crooked or missing tooth;  discoloured or decayed tooth and more troubles us nowadays. Where a simple sweet smile is something that everyone desires; cosmetic dentistry often comes to rescue. Here is a brief information about how cosmetic dentistry can improve your appearance.1. Teeth WhiteningMedications, consuming foods and beverages like tea, coffee, etc. or smoking can cause tooth discolouration. Many dentists in Mumbai employ in-office procedure, or provide you with whitening system to use at home.In-office whitening takes just 1-2 visits and teeth whitening under professional guidance is always good. However, it can take two to four weeks or more to get results from whitening products used at home.2. BondingIf your teeth have excess space between them, or if they are chipped, broken, stained, or cracked; dental bonding can improve the appearance of your teeth. Dentists also use bonding materials to fill small cavities or to protect the exposed root of a tooth. Bonding can last for several years, but it is more likely to chip or become stained.3. VeneersVeneers are made of porcelain or plastic to cover the front sides of the teeth. Veneers last longer than bonding. They are mostly done to change the colour or shape and provide a superior appearance. Veneers are used if:Have spaces or are chipped or wornAre permanently stainedAre poorly shaped or slightly crooked4. CrownsCaps or crowns completely cover a tooth to restore the normal shape and appearance. Dentists suggest crowns if you have to:Cover a misshapen/ discoloured tooth/ dental implant /large fillingProtect a weak tooth or restore a broken toothHold a dental bridge in placeCover a tooth that’s had a root canal treatmentPermanent crowns can last long if proper care is taken.5. Enamel Shaping and ContouringConsult a dentist for advise on enamel shaping and contouring to  enhance the appearance of your teeth. It involves removing or contouring dental enamel. It is used to correct:Misaligned/overlapping teethChipped teethBite problems6. BracesBraces improve the look of teeth and can improve an irregular bite and correct jaw positioning and jaw joint disorders. It is usually worn to reposition the teeth.7. BridgesBridges are used to replace missing teeth with artificial teeth. But the success of your bridge depends upon its foundation. Hence a healthy tooth is very important if you wear a bridge.8. Dental ImplantsDentists recommend implants as they are a long-term solution for missing teeth. They are an alternative to bridges. Having implants requires several steps, including:-A complete test X-rays, and consultation-Surgical implantation of the titanium screws-Taking impressions of both jaws-Making a model-Placement of the crownOther Periodontal Plastic ProceduresThere are even other cosmetic procedures to improve-An uneven gum line-Too short or too long teeth appearance-Exposed roots-IndentationsIf you are facing any of the above problems ask your dentist about your best options for correcting. Get the smile of your dreams.

What Cosmetic Dentistry Offers

Dr. Amit Anand, Dentist
Today’s common cosmetic dental treatment options include:Whitening, or “tooth bleaching“, is the most common cosmetic dental procedure. While many whitening options are now available, dentist-supervised treatments remain the recommended procedures for lightening discolored teeth.Enamel shaping removes parts of the contouring enamel to improve the appearance of the tooth. It may be used to correct a very small chip. The removed enamel is irreplaceable, and may sometimes expose dentin. It is also known asenameloplasty, odontoplasty, recontouring, reshaping, slenderizing and stripping.Contouring, also known as tooth reshaping, is one of few instant treatments now available in cosmetic dentistry. Dental reshaping and contouring is a procedure to correct crooked teeth, chipped teeth, cracked teeth or even overlapping teeth in just one session. The dental contouring procedure can even be a substitute for braces under certain circumstances. It is also a procedure of subtle changes. A few millimeters of reduction and a few millimeters of tooth-colored laminate is involved. Tooth reshaping, or dental contouring, is commonly used to alter the length, shape or position of teeth.Bonding is a process in which an enamel-like dental composite material is applied to a tooth’s surface, sculpted into shape, hardened and then polished.Dental bridges are false teeth, known as a pontic, which are fused between two porcelain crowns to fill in the area left by a missing tooth. The two crowns holding it in place that are attached onto your teeth on each side of the false tooth. This is known as a fixed bridge. This procedure is used to replace one or more missing teeth. Fixed bridges cannot be taken out of your mouth as you might do with removable partial dentures. In areas of your mouth that are under less stress, such as your front teeth, a cantilever bridge may be used. Cantilever bridges are used when there are teeth on only one side of the open space. Bridges can reduce your risk of gum disease, help correct some bite issues and even improve your speech. Bridges require your commitment to serious oral hygiene, but will last as many as ten years or more.Veneers are ultra-thin, custom-made porcelain laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth. They are an option for closing gaps or disguising discolored teeth that do not respond well to whitening procedures.Lumineers, similar to veneers are thin porcelain shields that are bonded to the front of the teeth to improve the appearance of a smile. Lumineers do not require the reduction of teeth structure, unlike veneers.Gum lift is a cosmetic dental procedure that raises and sculpts the gum line. The procedure involves reshaping the tissue and/or underlying bones to create the appearance of longer or more symmetrical teeth.

Do You Know too much of acidic foods can cause Tooth sensitivity? And best home care habbits to avoid it !!!! If You think that fruits or fruit juices, yoghurt, citric and health drinks, may seem like harmless snacks and beverages, then youmay have to rethink again seriously because researchers have proved  that improper consumption and overuse may lead to devastating and permanent damage to teeth. It’s known as tooth erosion, the break down of tooth structure caused by the effect of acid on the teeth that leads to decay. Health drinks and fruits, which contain acids , break the tooth surfaces. These acids also damage tooth enamel over time by dissolving the mineral structure of teeth, thinning the teeth.Eventually, because of repeated exposure to acid, the tooth’s enamel will loseits shape and colour and as the damage progresses; the underlying dentin, becomes exposed causing the teeth to look yellow and sensitive. How to Prevent it :To prevent tooth erosion, anyone  who eats or drink anacidic food or beverage should  wait  at least 20 minutes before brushing the teethso as not to destroy the weakened enamel. We also suggests eating acidic foodsduring meal times, instead of snacking on them throughout the day,  in order to minimize the amount of time the acid is on the teeth. It is important to also beware of habits such as lemon-sucking and swishing soda in the mouth.Doing this extends the amount of time that enamel and dentin are exposed to theacids and can increase the structural damage. But eating fruit as part of abalanced diet is good.Early Signs and What To Do !It’s not what you eat and drink that is important its how you consume those food is important.Early signs of tooth erosion consist of dentin hypersensitivity. In other words, if hot or cold foods and beverages cause pain  or sensitivity this is an indication of tooth erosion. See your Dentists at earliest to minimize the damage also Dentist may also recommend daily use of an OTC fluoridated anti-hypersensitivity toothpaste with a neutral pH to help re-harden softenedtooth.

Choosing the Right Cosmetic Dentist

Dr. Rainy Surana, Dentist
In the clinic the other day, I happened to read this incredible book by Dr. Ronald Goldstein – ” Change Your Smile ” Such a beauty, this book! Concise, detailed knowlege on all cosmetic procedures imparted through simple use of language. This book is a must-read for not only patients but all those in the dental field. Most of us have thought about improving our smile, but dont know where to start! Here are  some tips on choosing the right Cosmetic Dentist.THE FAMILY DENTIST:Your own dentist may be the best person to see for your cosmetic dental treatment. If your happy with the preventive treatment your general dentist has provided, ask about his or her experience and qualifications in the area of cosmetic dentistry.LOCATION:For the sake of convenience, most people choose to visit a neighborhood dentist for their routine dental treatment. When seeking a cosmetic dentist, however, don’t let location alone be a deciding factor. Do some research to find the very best- you’ll be glad you did!HOW TO SELECT A GOOD COSMETIC DENTIST:Contact professionals in appearance related fields. These include plastic surgeons, cosmetologists, hair stylists, and modeling or theatrical agencies.Contact local dental specialists. These include orthodontists, oral surgeons, endodontists, prosthodontists, periodontists, and dental technitians. These specislists, who are familiar with the dentists in their communities, often can provide recommendations.Contact the Indian Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (IACD)or other similar national academies for cosmetic dentists in your area.Ask friends and business associates.Use the internet to research specific areas your interested in, but use caution (most internet sites are not governed or overseen by state board)Do your Homework! Don’t rely on advertisements and magazines.HOW TO EVALUATE A COSMETIC DENTIST:Once you have several referrals, evaluate each dentists website. Compare credentials, treatment photos, educational background, and any professional teaching positions. Beware of Hype!Ask for a consultation. Expect to pay a fee for the dentist’s time, as well as for any x-rays, computer imaging, intra-oral exams, models, photographs and other records.Outline your expectations in a wish-list before your first meeting with the dentist.Bring photographs of yourself showing what u used to look like (if you want to have your teeth restored to a previous condition) or pictures of others who have the look you want to achieve.Ask to see photographs of patients the dentist has treated with similar conditions.Don’t shop for bargains. Instead, look for a dentist who will spend the time it takes to give you what you want. Otherwise, you may end up spending twice the money and time fixing mistakes.Get a wax-up. In this procedure, your dentist applies a special wax either to a cast made from your teeth or directly to your mouth to give you an idea how the final result may look.Consider a trial smile, Removable “snap in” teeth made of acrylic or composite resin allow you to actually ‘wear your new smile before any treatment is done.Ask if the dentist is able to obtain digital images of various treatment alternatives using computer imaging.Be aware of your problems and their potential treatment alternatives before seeing the dentist by performing the smile analysis.Arrive at your appointment early. You will need time to complete your forms and communicate your desires unhurriedly and in a relaxed atmosphere.Bring any x rays or study models you have made.Be upfront about budget restrictions. Also, bring your dental insurance information to the appointment. Although typically insurance does not pay for cosmetic treatment, the restorative portions of the treatment, such as crowns and bridges, may be at least partially covered.Be willing to invest in second or third opinion.WHAT ABOUT THE FEES?Time and expense are two factors that you must consider when seeking cosmetic dental treatment. Although it may be tempting to opt for shortcuts and bargains, remember the old saying-‘ you get what you pay for’The best esthetic dentistry requires a highly personalized artistic approach and thus typically is neither offered at discount prices nor covered by insurance.WHEN ASSESSING FEES FOR COSMETIC DENTISTRY:Take into account Dentist’s artistic skill and experience.Ask to see photos of patients who have undergone treatment similar to what your considering.Find how much time the dentist is willing to spend on your treatment. Make sure the fee reflects an adequate amount of time to satisfy your needs.Keep in mind that cosmetic dentistry is a team effort. The skill of the dentists support staff- available dental specialists, the dental hygienist, the dental assistant, and especially the laboratory technician who fabricates your restorations- is critical.Don’t base your decision solely on price. Instead, match your need for a believably natural result with what your willing to pay.Make sure you aren’t rushed during your consultation- see the fees as a long term investment. The most important goal of any consultation is to have the entire dental team thoroughly understand your vision of the esthetic result you seek.QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR COSMETIC DENTIST:What are my cosmetic options? What compromises may I have to accept? What will the final result look like? Can I see before and after photographs of patients you’ve treated with similar problems? How long will my restorations last? How well will the restorations stand up to wear? What type of maintenance is required? How closely will the restorations match my natural teeth? Will I have to change my eating habits? What guarantees or warrantees do I have? What are my payment options?TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS:Trust is a major factor in choosing a cosmetic dentist. Your esthetic restorations may initially appear beautiful, and your expectations may be met esthetically, but will their beauty stand the test of time? Were they designed to fit precisely and thereby not irritate the soft tissue? Because its almost impossible for you, as the patient, to make these determinations, it is essential to find a dentist who has the training, experience, and willingness to dedicate the time needed to get exceptional , long lasting results. In short, the dentist must earn your trust.

Fast and Furious Dentistry

Dr. Bianca Nazareth Arya, Dentist
Everybody is in a hurry these days. We know it by the incessant honking while driving. We see it by the number of traffic signals people break. We sense it when people keep looking at their watches in the middle of a conversation. We read it in the abbreviated smses we receive. Everyone thinks they are starring in the Fast and The Furious. It doesn't matter what it is that has to be done next. It may not even be significant. The important thing is to finish what we are doing right now and get on with the next thing on the schedule even if it is just driving to the next pan shop and lighting up a cigarette. This perpetual hurrying extends to everything - it even extends to medical and dental treatment. For years these same people may have lived with a broken tooth but when they finally start treatment they want it done in a day. In the past - this blog post may have focused on patience however with dentistry evolving at the speed that it is we'd much rather focus on the fact that hurrying is now possible. Hurrying WITHOUT compromising on quality. Technologies that enable chair side scanning and milling ( example CEREC) are here to save the day and how. Technologies which allow a tooth to be fabricated in a day. Right in front of a patient. No more impression taking and waiting for 4-5 days for the laboratory to send back a crown. Now this can be done chair side. Beautiful, aesthetic and life like restorations fabricated right beside you. People who come into town just for dental treatment will no longer need to keep travelling back and forth or stay at hotels till treatment is completed. They merely take an appointment, come in, get treatment done, and travel back the same day. (Of course this means that consultation either physically or online has been done previously and the plan is in place). What is more - cosmetic/aesthetic cases where the patients don't want to stay 4-5 with temporary teeth in their mouth CEREC will be a godsend. Wait a few hours in the clinic and you walk out with a glowing smile with permanent restorations. More and more innovations are directed today at time saving preserving quality at the same time. Single sitting root canals, single sitting crowns, dental implants and a whole host of other treatments done in one sitting. One day. Of course not all kinds of patients fall into the category of One Day Dentistry but most patients do. All you need to do is identify a dentist who possesses the technology you need. We understand the world is running. Dentistry is catching up. FAST and FURIOUSLY!

Laser in Dentistry

Dr. Rajat Sachdeva, Dentist
Laser treatment is becoming widely recognised and can be applied to prevent caries from developing and to reduce the progression of caries. The mechanism of laser should be understood before a dentist could apply in his daily practice. The Enamel surface of tooth is made of crystals called ‘Hydroxyapetite’ and it is permeable in nature therefore, allowing diffusion of ions. During laser treatment, moderate heat(CO2 laser produces temp > 1000 degree celcius) is produced which changes the composition of Enamel from ‘hydroxyapetite’ to ‘carbonated apetite’ in which there is loss of water in the crystals, as a result the pores of Enamel shrink down to form ‘Microspace system’. The Microspace system provides a means for trapping Calcium, phosphate and fluoride ions which release during demineralization and acts as site for re-precipitation. The trapped minerals phases inside the Enamel and impedes lesion formation and progression causing enhanced resistance against demineralization. As the microspaces are smaller in size, it decreases the permeability of the Enamel thereby reducing the diffusion of ions in and out thereby reducing the demineralization process. Thus a seal is achieved and so is resistance to caries. The Dentin also gets acid resistance as there is increased mineral content due to burning of organic matter from tissue so there is increased Calcium and Phosphate found in recrystallized Dentin.LASERS IN ENDODONTICSEndodontic procedure carried out by conventional methods may not be successful in spite of utmost care. Despite the mechanical removal, irrigation and disinfection of canals, the bacteria can still persist which cannot be reached by conventional techniques. As the technology has advanced, now lasers are used in endodontic procedures to improve the prognosis of the treatment of tooth. Laser light penetrates upto >1000 micrometre into the dentin and provides a distinct advantage since the bacteria can immigrate upto 1000 micrometre into tubules. When in contact with laser, cell membrane gets destroyed due to the impact of direct heat and this damage is enough to stop the growth of the bacteria depending on the wavelength and frequency of laser irradiation used by the dentist. It is a very effective tool for disinfecting the root canal after mechanical root canal treatment as it has sufficient penetration depth. It is effective in curved canals also and the energy is transported by thin flexible fibres which have diameter of only 200 micrometer. Laser eradicates the microbial flora of root canal and also has same effect on surrounding dentin without affecting the surrounding tissue and has good disinfection mechanism without causing pain and improving the prognosis of the endodontic treatment.LASERS IN ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERYLasers have played an integral part in the evolution of practice of oral and maxillo-facial surgery as the procedures can be executed efficiently with less complication. There are many advantages such as :-Maintenance of sterile condition.Precise and accurateDecreased post-operative swellingImproved tissue scarring and healingMore accessibleLess instruments neededLess painLess cost, staff and timeLaser in Implant (Peri-implantitis)Laser makes it possible to remove diseased tissue around a dental implant without causing any significant harm to the healthy tissue. It is gentle, reducing inflammation and discomfort while encouraging new bone growth to reinforce and save your implant. Cosmetic facial Laser surgeryLaser is used to treat facial lesions and skin wrinkles by removing the surface layer of skin allowing the underlying skin to re-epithilialize in a uniform manner. E.g. tissue tags, epidermal nevi, lentigines, superficial pigmentation, skin wrinkles, scar revision, melisma etc.‘Laser’ in routine dentistryPericoronitisFrenectomy and AnkyloglossiaLaser assisted Biopsy
