Acne Myths Busted

Dr. Rohit Batra, Dermatologist
1. 'Don't eat greasy food and chocolate, because you'll break out.'This is probably the biggest misconception about acne. Junk food won't cause you to breakout. However, if you want to cut back on these foods for other health reasons, go for it!2. 'You should scrub your face hard because dirty skin causes acne.'We all should practice good hygiene. Who wants to walk around with a dirty Face? You should wash your face at least twice a day. Washing your face a lot and scrubbing it too hard won't clear up your acne; instead, it could aggravate the skin and make it worse.3. 'You have to let acne run its course.'No way! Acne is a treatable condition. No need to wait for acne to clear up on its own. The longer you wait, the more likely your chances are of permanent scarring.4. 'Make-up won't make your zits worse.'Wrong. Makeup contains oil that can worsen the acne. If you choose to wear makeup, choose products labelled non-comedogenic and oil-free.5. 'Suntanning reduces acne.'While a suntan can temporarily dry up some of the oil, the drying factor could actually encourage the skin to produce more oil, thus, causing more acne. Besides, over-exposure to the sun will cause wrinkles, age spots, blotchy spots and sagging skin sooner than usual.6 'Cleanse your blood for an acne free face'Acne is caused due to excessive sebum i.e. oil secretion. It's not the blood but the oil glands which when gets blocked and infected that a pimple pops out. So there is no need to consume blood purifiers.7. 'Acne scars are not treatable'Fractional lasers, platelet rich plasma, derma rollers and other surgical options available nowadays can reduce scarring considerably if done by an experienced professional.8. 'Acne occurs only on face'Acne can occur anywhere above the waistline- scalp, back, chest, shoulders, inside ears- all can get acne apart from the face. It's never too late to visit a dermatologist to cure your acne and acne scarring. Don't let others decide the fate of your face.

Are You Making These Mistakes When Treating Acne?

Dr. Tina Ramachander, Dermatologist
"Dear stress let's break up" this kind of a break up is the best one, one can have especially when it comes to acne.Acne (pimple) is a very common skin condition, which is frustrating for most people . Often patients self medicate to get rid of the painful bumps so that they heal faster. The top 5 mistakes while self medicating for acne would be :1) Use of steroids for treating acne, which are available off the counter. These creams initially makes the skin look clear but eventually worsen acne, cause thinning of the surface due to which there is a itching and burning sensation on the affected area and growth of hair. Hence, steroid usage is the worst thing for acne.2) Excessive washing of face with a soap or face wash, leads to rebound dryness, so it's best that a face wash is used twice a day to wash face and rest of the time splash plain water on face.3) Pinching or squeezing the acne leads to deep scars, conscious efforts have to be made to keep hands away from pimples.4) Use of strong house hold remedies like lemon, toothpaste, garlic etc. to heal acne leads to a bad burn like reaction on face, it's best avoided.5) Acne is a disorder which leads to a lot of anxiety, depression and social isolation, if any family member is going through a state like this, it's time to step up and seek professional help to not only treat acne with a dermatologist but also counselling which provides help and support to heal.Mistakes are learning curves to propel us towards the righteous decisions. Hope these 5 pointers help shed light on the common errors when self treating acne.

What Makes Your Skin Prone to Acne? Top 5 Causes of Acne

Dr. Jolly Shah Kapadia, Dermatologist
Acne is one of the most common skin conditions affecting people all over the world. Acne is not a harmful condition, but it is an irritating problem affecting ones looks and sometimes even ones confidence. How does acne occur?Human skin has follicles or pores in them through which the hair comes out. The accumulation of sebum secreted by one’s own sebaceous glands, within the pores of the human skin can sometimes clog these pores. When this accumulates, the dead skin cells also get stuck in it and results in a swelling, which takes the form of a pimple like a crest. This accumulated material allows bacteria to grow and flourish leading to pus filled boils.  Acne is most prevalent among adolescents due to rapid hormonal changes in the body, although many adults and pre-adolescents have also reported this problem. Here are some common issues and lifestyle factors which make you prone to acne.1. Hormonal ImbalanceThis is probably the most common reason cited for acne as adolescents tend to be afflicted by this problem. In many cases, acne gradually goes away on its own after sometime, although in other cases it does stay. In adults, especially women it has been noticed that certain hormonal changes in the body may act as acne triggers. Some of the examples of hormonal imbalances are :- Monthly cycles related triggers in adult and adolescent women.- High testosterone levels in women.- Excessive androgen in men and women.- Hormonal problems due to polycystic ovary syndrome and others.- Taking medicines or steroids that may cause hormonal changes.2. External factorsExcessive use of cosmetic products e.g. make-up, can cause problems within the skin, block the pores and cause acne. This can cause acne even if you do not have sebum related problems.Working in an oil splattered setting e.g. in the kitchen of a fast-food joint may also bring out the boils. Oil particles in the air can coat your skin and clog your pores. 3. Diet Poor nutrition may make acne-prone teens even more susceptible to breakouts. Research has proved that excessive oil consumption as well as having foods rich in fat can cause acne problems. A diet high in refined sugar and starch may make an acne flare-up more likely. Foods in this group include: - Processed foods like chips, crackers, and cookies.- Starches like white bread, pasta, and potatoes.- Sugary drinks like soda. These foods step up your blood sugar. Your body responds by secreting more insulin, which increases the production of skin oils and contributes to the clogging of follicles. Moreover, if you consume iodine in large quantities or for a long time, it results in irritation of the skin pores giving rise to acne.4. Certain medications and drugsConsumption of specific over-the-counter medicines like the ones containing bromide and use of recreational drugs like marijuana and cocaine can lead to the occurrence of acne as side effects. Corticosteroids, Lithium, Androgens are other drugs which can cause acne.5. Genetics Certain genetic factors may also be responsible for someone being more prone to acne than others.

Homeopathy Treatment for Acne or Pimples

Dr. Rangadhar Satapathy, Homeopath
Acne is a skin condition that causes white heads, black heads, and inflamed red lesions (papules, pustules, and cysts) to form. These growths are commonly called pimples. Acne occurs when tiny holes on the surface of the skin, called pores, become clogged. Each pore is an opening to a canal called a follicle, which contains a hair and an oil gland. Normally, the oil glands help keep the skin lubricated. When glands produce too much oil, the pores can become blocked, accumulating dirt, debris, and bacteria. The blockage is called a plug or comedoneCAUSES & CONTRIBUTING FACTORSNormal Follicles:Sebum produced by the sebaceous gland combines with cells being sloughed off within the hair follicle and "fillsup" the hair follicle. When the follicle is "full", the sebum spreads over the skin surface giving the skin an oily appearance.Obstructed FolliclesWhen the sebum is trapped in the hair follicle causes plugging up the follicle. The process of obstructing follicles is called comedogenesis. It causes some follicles to form a type of acne called comedones, also known as blackheads and whiteheads.Propioni bacteriumacne:Propioni bacterium acne is a bacterium that lives on your skin and uses the sebum as nutrients for his growth. The sebaceous glands are hypersensitive to androgens that causes enlarge of gland and more sebum secretion. In puberty the androgens hormone is secreted more and thus there is more sebum secretion and more Propionibacterium acne in the follicle. The presence of P.acne attracts WBC to the follicle and thus an inflammatory reaction is settled up.No one factor causes acne. Several factors can contribute to the cause of acneChanging Hormone LevelsFor most people with acne, it begins at puberty. This is when the body starts to produce hormones called androgens. Androgens cause the enlargement and over stimulation of the sebaceous glands.Sensitivity to these androgens also cause acne to appear during the menstrual cycle and sometimes in pregnancy. Starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne.StressSevere or prolonged emotional tension and stress may aggravate the Acne condition. Stress cause the production of hormones, such as cortisol, which can aggravate acne.Drugs:Some medications may cause acne, such as anti convulstant drugs, lithium, bromides, or oral or injected steroids. Most cases of acne, however, are not drug related.Skin Care ProductsSome cosmetics and skin-care products are pore clogging. The skin care products which have the ingredients of ‘waterbased’ are usually safe.PATHOGENESIS OF ACNEThereare 4 basic factors involved in the development of acne.Acne arises due to blockage of follicles, the sebaceous follicles which are found in the face, neck, chest,and/or back. In acne patients, the sebaceous glands attached to these follicles secrete excessive amounts of sebum. It has been shown that the sebaceous glands in acne patients tend to be hyper responsive to androgens, which are first released in the pre-pubertal period. Thus, these patients produce more sebum than is normal; this excessive secretion is a necessary prerequisite for the onset of acne.Second, the epithelial cells (keratinous squamous cells) lining of inner most layer of the follicles undergo abnormal desquamation. The cause why it happens is unknown. Normally, keratinous squamous cells are loosely organized in normal follicle, but they become denser and more coherent as a result of abnormal desquamation. The combination of abnormally desquamated cells and excessive sebum forms a “plug,” or microcomedo — the precursor lesion of both non inflammatory comedones and inflammatory lesions.Third, the propionibacterium acne is a bacterium that lives on your skin and uses the sebum as nutrients for his growth. The sebaceous glands are hypersensitive to androgens that causes enlarge of gland and more sebum secretion. In puberty the androgens hormone is secreted more and thus there is more sebum secretion and more Propionibacterium acne in the follicle. The presence of P.acne attracts WBC to the follicle and thus an inflammatory reaction is settled upFourth, P acnes produces pro-inflammatory mediators and chemotactic factors that can cause microcomedones to inflame and evolve into papules, pustules, and nodules.HOW HOMEOPATHY HELPSA proper homeopathy treatment reduces the hypersensitivity of sebaceous gland to androgen hormone so helps to maintain a normal secretion of sebum. That prevents the acne formation.Homeopathyremedies have anti inflammatory effect and accelerate the healing process ininflamed acne conditions.Pro pionibacterium acne is a frequent cause of bacterial keratitis and may cause propionibacterium acne keratitis. Homeopathy remedies treats successfully to the P.acne keratitiscondition.Homeopathy treatment controls the scar formation.A constitutional homeopathy treatment not only treats the acne condition but also treats the whole patients as a whole.

Dr. Poonam Negi
ACNE: OVERVIEWAcne is the most common skin condition . Although it's common, accurate information about acne can be scarce. This can make it difficult to get clearer skin. The information here can help you understand acne and how to successfully treat it.Why treat acne?Myths about acne are as common as the skin problem. One common myth is that you have to let acne run its course.Dermatologists know that letting acne run its course is not always the best advice. Here's why:Without treatment, dark spots and permanent scars can appear on the skin as acne clears.Treating acne often boosts a person’s self-esteem.Many effective treatments are available.More women get acne not  just teens have acne. A growing number of women have acne in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. Dermatologists are not sure why this is happening. But dermatologists understand that adult acne can be particularly frustrating.ACNE: SIGNS AND SYMPTOMSAcne signsMany people think that acne is just pimples. But a person who has acne can have any of these blemishes:Blackheads.Whiteheads.Papules.Pustules Cysts.Nodules.Acne can appear on the back, chest, neck, shoulders, upper arms and buttocks.Acne symptomsAcne can cause more than blemishes. Studies show that people who have acne can have:Low self-esteem: Many people who have acne say that their acne makes them feel bad about themselves. Because of their acne, they do not want to be with friends. They miss school and work. Grades can slide, and absenteeism can become a problem because of their acne.Depression: Many people who have acne suffer from more than low self-esteem. Acne can lead to a medical condition called depression. The depression can be so bad that people think about what it would be like to commit suicide. Many studies have found that teens who believe that they have “bad” acne were likely to think about committing suicide.Dark spots on the skin: These spots appear when the acne heals. It can take months or years for dark spots to disappear.Scars (permanent): People who get acne cysts and nodules often see scars when the acne clears. You can prevent these scars. Be sure to see a dermatologist for treatment if you get acne early — between 8 and 12 years old. If someone in your family had acne cysts and nodules, you also should see a dermatologist if you get acne. Treating acne before cysts and nodules appear can prevent scars.ACNE: WHO GETS AND CAUSESWho gets acne?If you have a bad case of acne, you may feel like you are the only one. But many people have acne. It is the most common skin problem Most people who have acne are teenagers or young adults, but acne can occur at any age. Newborn babies can get acne. Men and women get acne. Some women get acne when they reach middle age. What causes acne?Acne appears when a pore in our skin clogs. This clog begins with dead skin cells. Normally, dead skin cells rise to surface of the pore, and the body sheds the cells. When the body starts to make lots of sebum , oil that keeps our skin from drying out, the dead skin cells can stick together inside the pore. Instead of rising to the surface, the cells become trapped inside the pore.Sometimes bacteria that live on our skin, p. acnes, also get inside the clogged pore. Inside the pore, the bacteria have a perfect environment for multiplying very quickly. With loads of bacteria inside, the pore becomes inflamed (red and swollen). If the inflammation goes deep into the skin, an acne cyst or nodule appears.ACNE: DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENTTo diagnose acne, a dermatologist will first examine your skin to make sure you have acne. Other skin conditions can look like acne. If you have acne, the dermatologist will:Grade the acne. Grade 1 is mild acne. Grade 4 is severe acne.Note what type, or types, of acne appear on your skin.Today, there are many effective acne treatments. This does not mean that every acne treatment works for everyone who has acne. But it does mean that virtually every case of acne can be controlled.People who have mild acne have a few blemishes. They may have whiteheads, blackheads, papules, and/or pustules (aka pimples). Many people can treat mild acne with products that you can buy without a prescription. A product containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid often clears the skin. This does not mean that the acne will clear overnight.Despite the claims, acne treatment does not work overnight. At-home treatment requires 4-8 weeks to see improvement. Once acne clears, you must continue to treat the skin to prevent breakouts. If you have a lot of acne, cysts, or nodules, a medicine that you can buy without a prescription may not work. If you want to see clearer skin, you should see a dermatologist. Dermatologists offer the following types of treatment.Acne treatment that you apply to the skin: Most acne treatments are applied to the skin. Your dermatologist may call this topical treatment. There are many topical acne treatments. Some topicals help kill the bacteria. Others work on reducing the oil. The topical medicine may contain a retinoid, prescription-strength benzoyl peroxide, antibiotic, or even salicylic acid. Your dermatologist will determine what you need.Acne treatment that works throughout the body: Medicine that works throughout the body may be necessary when you have red, swollen types of acne. This type of treatment is usually necessary to treat acne cysts and nodules. Your dermatologist may prescribe one or more of these.Antibiotics (helps to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation).Birth control pills and other medicine that works on hormones (can be helpful for women).Isotretinoin (the only treatment that works on all that causes acne).   Procedures that treat acne: Your dermatologist may treat your acne with a procedure that can be performed during an office visit. These treatments include.Lasers and other light therapies: These devices reduce the p. acnes bacteria. Your dermatologist can determine whether this type of treatment can be helpful.Chemical peels: You cannot buy the chemical peels that dermatologists use. Dermatologists use chemical peels to treat 2 types of acne — blackheads and papules.Acne removal: Your dermatologist may perform a procedure called “drainage and extraction” to remove a large acne cyst. This procedure helps when the cyst does not respond to medicine. It also helps ease the pain and the chance that the cyst will leave a scar. If you absolutely have to get rid of a cyst quickly, your dermatologist may inject the cyst with medicine.Waiting for acne to clear on its own can be frustrating. Without treatment, acne can cause permanent scars, low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. To avoid these possible outcomes, dermatologists recommend that people treat acne. When the skin clears, treatment should continue. Treatment prevents new breakouts. Your dermatologist can tell you when you no longer need to treat acne to prevent breakouts.ACNE: TIPS FOR MANAGINGYou can reduce your acne by following these skin care tips from dermatologists.Wash twice a day and after sweating. Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet, can make acne worse, so wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating.Use your fingertips to apply a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser. Using a washcloth, mesh sponge or anything else can irritate the skin.Be gentle with your skin. Use gentle products, such as those that are alcohol-free. Do not use products that irritate your skin, which may include astringents, toners and exfoliants. Dry, red skin makes acne appear worse.Scrubbing your skin can make acne worse. Avoid the temptation to scrub your skin.Rinse with lukewarm water.Shampoo regularly. If you have oily hair, shampoo daily.Let your skin heal naturally. If you pick, pop or squeeze your acne, your skin will take longer to clear and you increase the risk of getting acne scars.Keep your hands off your face. In addition, some acne medications make the skin very sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light so do use a mattyfyin or gel based sunscreenConsult a dermatologist if:Your acne makes you shy or embarrassed. The products you've tried have not worked.Your acne is leaving scars or darkening your skin.Today, virtually every case of acne can be successfully treated.
