Nose picking normal in children
Colour of mucus is normal secondary to bleed
Next Steps
just close the nose while it bleeds n breath from mouth .( put pressure as much as u can)..n heads up facing the roof.
can do cold water sponge ,
Use oxymetazoline drops 0.05% one to two drops TDS....that will definitely help
Nose picking is commonest cause of nasal bleed in children.Ask him to avoid nose picking if he does so.
During period of active bleed press the tip of nose to stop bleeding. If bleeding continues then go for ice fomantation in the affected area and use decongestant nasal drop.
Inspite of these measures if bleeding continues then consult to any ENT specialist.

Nose bleeding could be due to dryness of the nasal mucosa, picking the nose or rarely nasal disorder.change in colour of the mucus is due to the dried blood mixed with the mucus. You can apply otrivin nasal drops and saline nasal spray for a 3-5 days.Consider consulting a ENT specialist if it continues to bleed.

The problem has to be tackled at two levels.
One is immediate treatment when he is actually bleeding from the nose. The second is long term treatment so that this problem doesn't recur.
Please seek a formal consultation with a General Physician or an ENT Specialist for further information.
I’m sorry to hear about your son’s recurring nosebleeds. Here are some steps you can take to manage and treat his nosebleeds at home:
Stay Calm and Reassure Him: Help him stay calm and sit upright, leaning slightly forward. This prevents blood from running down his throat, which can cause coughing or vomiting1.
Pinch the Nose: Gently pinch the soft part of his nose (just below the nasal bridge) using a tissue or clean towel. Maintain pressure for about 10 minutes, even if the bleeding stops earlier1.
Avoid Nose Picking and Blowing: Encourage him not to pick or blow his nose for a few days after a nosebleed to allow the blood vessels to heal2.
Use a Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the bridge of his nose can help reduce blood flow2.
If the nosebleeds continue to occur frequently or are severe, it would be best to consult me . We would suggest treatments like applying silver nitrate to seal blood vessels or cauterizing them1.
Regarding the color of his mucus, yellow, brown, or black mucus can sometimes indicate the presence of dried blood or an infection. If this persists or is accompanied by other symptoms like fever or severe congestion, it would be wise to consult a doctor for a thorough evaluation.
If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask!
Dear Mr. Prashanth,
Thank you for sharing your concern. Recurrent nosebleeds in children, especially over a span of several months, can have multiple causes. Common reasons include:
1. Dryness or irritation in the nasal passages, especially in dry or polluted environments.
2. Nose-picking or trauma, as you mentioned.
3. Allergic conditions, leading to inflammation and fragile blood vessels.
4. In rare cases, underlying nutritional deficiencies, or less commonly, systemic issues like blood clotting disorders.
The discoloration of mucus could indicate dried blood mixing with mucus, which is expected post-bleed. However, the black or brown shade may sometimes be associated with inhaled irritants (like pollution or smoke) or infections.
My recommendations:
1. Immediate Care: Use a saline nasal spray or drops to keep the nasal passages moist. Avoid nose-picking and teach your son to gently blow his nose.
2. Lifestyle Modifications: Ensure a humid environment, especially at night, to prevent nasal dryness.
3. Further Evaluation: It’s crucial to identify and address the root cause. A clinical examination and possibly some tests (like blood investigations or nasal endoscopy) might be necessary.
I strongly recommend scheduling a private consultation for a comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment plan. I will guide you with expert care to ensure your son gets the best treatment possible.
