Also, along with fasting and post-prandial blood sugar levels checking HbA1c is also important as it tell the average blood sugar in the past 3 months. A personalized diet session is strongly recommended for your husband as it takes into account his lifestyle, routine, eating habits, medical conditions, medications, physical activity, height, weight, sleep pattern etc all of which is important when it comes to planning a diabetic diet. As mentioned in details your husband is taking diabetes medication it is important to understand what type of medication it is and also the portions of the food will depend on the same as well as the other factors mentioned above. Following changes can be helpful - 1. Do not skip meals and have balanced meals throughout the day 2. Incorporate protein rich foods like dals, pulses, sprouts, curd, tofu, soya in every meal as it causes slow release of energy 3. Salad to be part of every meal as it is rich in fiber 4. Incorporate whole grains and cereals such whole wheat flour, jowar, bajra, brown rice etc 5. Have 2 fruits throughout the day preferablu mid meals and avoid fruits such as banana, chickoo, custardapple and fruit juices 6. Exercise 45 minutes daily. Connect with us as proper guidelines of exercises are necessary for people with diabetes 7. Drink 2-3 liters lf water 8. Avoid long gaps in between meals, have small frequent meals. 9. Avoid refined flour (maida) and its products, sugar, sweets, fried food, processed and packaged food as they cause rapid spike in blood sugar levels
