This involves changing from the sitting “gear” to the standing “gear”. First thing in the morning, the spine and pelvis often have difficulty changing gears. After you’ve been relatively immobile all night, it can be an uncomfortable shock to attempt “popping up” into the standing gear.

Bad Moves

  • Avoid sitting slumped on the side of the bed. If you’re on a soft mattress where you’ll tend to sink in.
  • As you stand up, avoid bending over. Try not to 'arch' the low back and drop the head forward before you attempt to straighten up.

Good Moves

  • Attempt to sit tall and gently arch the low backup and forward before standing.
  • Bring one foot underneath you; keep your pelvislevel as you simultaneously straighten your legs and shift from your back foot to your front foot.
