Introduction: Hair loss affects millions of women around the world, and around half of men would lose their hair by the age of 50. The most common type of hair loss among men is male pattern baldness called and rogeneticalopecia. For women, the most common triggers are hormonal (pregnancy, menopause, thyroid disorders, polycystic ovarian syndrome) or hereditary, but autoimmune conditions and nutritional deficiencies are also common. And unlike men, women tend to lose hair gradually and all over the head, so it can take longer to detect. Women don’t get hair line recession but widening of the hair parting.Treatments for hair loss: Being such multifactorial in causes, there is no one magical treatment that can treat the hair loss in all causes. Most of today's medicines for treating hair loss have limited effectiveness. Currently, we don't have a complete understanding of exactly why certain diseases cause hair loss. In many cases, we treat the symptoms, but not the causes of diseases. And often our ability to treat symptoms has limited effectiveness. For many sufferers, it destroys confidence and is a major cause of stress and depression.  Cutis Philosophy: At Cutis, we respect client first. We understand your needs and strive hard to get the best and latest  technology from all over the world to your doorstep. Right from the blood tests to nutritional counseling, we guide our patients at each step and make them understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. However the treatment options are depending on the severity of the hair loss. These are:  Peptide Hair Spray: This is plant based Italian technology that is available as 30 ml spray bottles and contains a mix of peptides as well as growth factors which activate the hair root cells in the hair follicle and strengthen the existing hair follicles. This should usually be sprayed on the front and side of scalp (not on back) twice a week and left overnight. Next morning shampoo must be used.Cost: 1350 INR for 30ml sprayHair supplement: Lets face it. We cant eat all that our hair needs in the food on a daily basis, more so if you are a vegetarian. So it is wise to pop a hair supplement that contains all the essential nutrients that are needed for your crowning glory. Hair Induction: Depending on the extent of hair damage and the hormonal and nutritional deficiency, sometimes hair needs more than just topical medications and hair supplements. At Cutis we have the hair Induction programme that is a specially designed 6 weeks treatment done once in a week for 6 weeks. What is it? After forming PRP ( platelet rich plasma) from the patients own blood it is mixed with growth factors and infused into the scalp at the level of the hair roots with the help of a laser. This ensures a better targeted delivery of the active molecules resulting in faster and effective action. The results are seen in 3-4 weeks with small sprouts of hair seen growing out in both men and women.Cost: 8000 per session.Hair stem cell injections: These are plant based botanical stem cells that are very effective in mild to moderate balding and hair loss. The stem cells are penetrated into the scalp using a painless technology and usually 6-8 sessions may be needed to get optimum results.Cost: 5000 per sessionHair growth Laser: These are low level lasers that are used in the form of a laser cap and that stimulate the hair roots into the active stage. Prior to using the laser , the scalp is cleansed and a stimulating lotion is applied on the hair root. Each session lasts 20-25 minutes and is totally relaxing and painless. In severe cases this laser session can also be combined with hair induction or hair stem cell programme to accelerate the results. Cost : 4200 per session.

Dr. Vinod Sonawane, Hair Transplant Surgeon
There are several hair product  advertisements, for different types of hair and different types of hair problems, but we miss on the very simple and basic things that can give us lustrous hair. Following are some simple lifestyle changes you can make to improve your hair health drastically-  Wash your hair at least 3 times a week.  Most people use styling product or gel, so it is necessary to clean the buildup. Regular washing keeps the hair follicles clean so new hair growth has a clear path to your scalp’s surface. Most people use way too much shampoo to wash hair, only a small amount, the size of a coin is the right amount of shampoo that is required to wash the hair properly and clean the scalp. Dry the hair naturally. Any soft cotton cloth should be used for drying the hair, heavy towels should not be used for tying the hair. Trim the hair regularly every 6 to 8 weeks, this will help in getting rid of split ends.Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water everyday . Your diet should be rich in protein, iron, zinc.Massage the scalp, with your finger tips for 5 minutes, 2-3 times a day.  This increases the blood flow in the scalp region and aids hair growth. In India, the tradition of massaging oil in the scalp before bathing is followed, this improves blood flow and helps in conditioning the hairs. Even when you are not washing or applying oil to hair, still you should massage scalp everyday for 5 minutes.Blow drying and styling hair should be limited for special occasions.A few changes in routine life and habits can make a huge difference to the health of your hair. If you try these changes, you will witness them yourself!

GROWTH OF HAIR AND FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE HAIR GROWTHWhen a new baby is born, he or she has soft, fine and downy hair called lanugo that disappears shortly after the birth. Normally hair on the scalp and other parts of body becomes thicker and coarser. In middle age, hair growth can be seen on the ears of men and women develop the same on face at the time of menopause. This is due to change in endocrine pattern.Stages of hair growth-ANAGEN HAIR (Period of Active Growth)The stage when the growing is in process, the hair is called ‘Anagen’ hair. Anagen hair keeps on growing from two to five years. In Anagen hair, the cells of follicle grow, divide and are keratinized in order to make hair grow. Having keratin means that the base of the hair shaft is moist and soft and the rest of hair shaft above hair bulb is dark pigmented.CATAGEN HAIR (Period of Transition or Breakdown and Change)When the hair is under transition stage, which is from root to end, the hair is called ‘catagen’ hair. Catagen hair, begin transitional, live for about 7 to 15 days. During this transition phase, the growth activity of the hair stops. Growth of hair is not a continuous affair as some people think. Hair growing takes a resting phase during which no growth takes place and the roots of the resting hair become club-shaped. It is this condition that is called club hairs.TELOGEN HAIR (Resting Stage before Resumption Of Growth)Catagen hair live for some time and when they are in the state of rest without any change, they are called ‘Telogen’ hair. Telogen hair are also called club hair. They are in the state of rest for three to four months before they grow or are pushed from follicle due to growth of another hair or due to some harsh combing/ brushing or hard massaging/continuous drying of hair by hot hair-blower or in fight etc. All these are mechanical reasons.Factors that Influence the Hair GrowthAge: – Growth of hair is fastest from the age of fifteen to late twenties. The hair grows faster and the rate of growth slows down when the hair have grown to its maximum. There is no limit to maximum but some doctors are of the opinion that this limit is three feel which means that when the hair are over three feet long, the growth rate drops to half the former growth rate. Nervous and circulatory system: – The hair is affected by the state of the nervous system and circulatory system. This means that hair have a direct relation with functioning of the entire human organism, mind, sentiments, emotions and the body. Any such stimulation in the body by grief, emotions, etc. makes impact over the opulence of the nerve and blood supply to the head. If grief or emotions continue for some days, it affects the growth of hair.Chemicals & Drugs: – Chemical and drug reactions also affect the growth of hair. The coloring of hair and dyeing of hair are virtually exposure to chemical reactions and many persons who dye or color their hair have retarded hair growth or encounter falling of hair.Heredity: – The heredity/genes actually determine the hair density, growth and color of hair.Hormones: – Hormonal change is one of the reasons for growth of hair.Your Hair – An Index  to your Health….Our hair is not just ‘dead’ protein it is a pointer to what is happening deep inside our body and mind. Hair has more to it than what appears on the surface.  It says a lot more about us than what the stars foretell. The health of our hair and scalp provides us with insightful cues about a host of ‘latent’ health disorders. In addition, our hair, like our psyche, responds to both physical and emotional stressors, including underlying health deviations,  much before apparent clinical symptoms manifest.DRY, LIMP, THIN HAIR:-This may be a ‘cursor’ for hypothyroidism. In some cases, the ‘tell-tale’  sign is hair loss on the eyebrows, especially in the outer area of the eyebrow.SCALY  OR CRUSTY PATCHES ON THE SCALP:-This indicates psoriasis, a common skin disorder. It occurs when the skin for a ‘toss,’ sending out flawed signals that accelerate the turnover and growth of skin cells. The detection of psoriasis can help us prevent and treat more serious condition- especially psoriatic arthritis, or painful swelling of the joints with scaly psoriatic distress.OVERALL THINNING:-It’s customary to shed about 50-100 hairs a day. But, when hair appears to be coming out in ‘clumps,’ it’s time for action. Any extreme stress can be the reason for hair loss, liking losing a job can cause extreme hair loss. Likewise, about of flu or fever, illnesses like jaundice, typhoid and malaria can cause hair loss. Most importantly, diabetes and hypertension can also cause such hair loss, much before they may be clinically diagnosed. DRY, BRITTLE HAIR BREAKS EASILY:-This kind of hair loss can be a sign of autoimmune disorders, early onset diabetes and thyroid disease.

What You Need to Know About Hair Fall

Dr. Renu Garg, Homeopath
Hair is the crowning glory and problems with hair can become very upsetting for everyone. The hair fall problems in men and women have different reasons and therefore sometimes the line of treatment can also vary. However there are also some common areas which can be followed for controlling hair fall.Common reasons for hair fallPost pregnancy.Quick weight loss (more than 2-3 kilos a month comes in the category of quick weight loss). Not nourishing the hair adequately.Nutritional deficiencies.A very high protein diet or high acid not balanced by alkaline food.Weak liver.Post disease.Using strong and harsh hair colors , gels and styling productsSinusitis, migraine. Nutrition support for falling hair Protein consumption in balance, neither very high nor very low. Protein grows the hair and gives it strength, therefore the consumption should be adequate, but it should not be so much that the hair follicle and the body become so acidic so as to promote hair fall. For vegetarians - a diet which is vegetarian is called a low acid diet and usually does not lead to an acid build up. This is because plant proteins are more alkaline than animal proteins and also the protein in a dal usually stays within the range of 20 to 35%, which is mild .The sources of protein can be sprouts, tofu also called soya paneer, channa, both black and white, lobhia, green peas, green choliya etc Dairy is also a source of proteins which is an animal product but more acceptable to vegetarians. For non vegetarians the protein sources can be poultry, meat and fish. One aspect which non vegetarians must keep a watch on is the fact that non vegetarian protein sources are almost 100 % protein, therefore it is far easier to over consume the protein in a non vegetarian diet. To prevent an acid build up, non-vegetarians must consume a lot of alkaline food like vegetable juices, salads, vegetable soups, fruits.Fruits- all fruits are very rich in B group of vitamins and vitamin C. Both these groups are very important for the adequate growth of the hair shaft and roots. Therefore the diet must have fruits like oranges, pomegranate, apple, pineapple, guava, banana, grapes etc the consumption should be of 2 fruits daily.Herbs like triphala (a mix of 3 herbs –harar, behar and amla) and amla juice, tulsi, lemon, are very good for detoxifying the liver and clearing the toxins.Nuts provide the essential fatty acids which are important in hair growth; therefore a daily dose of some nuts and oil seeds should be taken. Depending upon the weather, one can take flax seed, olives, almond, walnuts, pistachio, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds.Vegetable juices like carrot, beetroot, pumpkin, lauki, mint, spinach, ginger, celery, aloe vera can be mixed in different amounts to create a health cocktail.Hair conditioningHair needs proper care and conditioning like the rest of the skin , and frequent harsh colors , dyes , perming gels ,a hair setting etc all said and done do damage the hair significantly . In case one is used to all the above then extensive hair oiling with the hair compatible oil and deep conditioning with a hair pack is necessary to avoid hair damage and fall.Managing stress and anxiety is also an important aspect and one of the most effective methods is pranayam.

9 Tips for Healthy Skin and Hair in Winter

Dr. Hardik S Pitroda, Dermatologist
Winter – the onset of weddings, festivities, vacation and parties. Time to rev up, let your hair down, sing, dance and enjoy the best of times with your friends and family. It’s but natural that you ought to look your gorgeous self at each and every occasion. But winter does make this difficult. Dry skin and hair can rob you of your natural glow. With these basic tips, it is possible to look your best this winter:1. Keep it lukewarmWinter is the time when your skin and hair need maximum attention. Though the idea of piping hot water is very tempting, stick to a lukewarm water bath every day. Make sure to use a mild non-drying soap or a moisturizing soap.2. ExfoliateDuring winters, the varying temperature outdoors and indoors can have a major effect on the skin. While taking a shower, get into the habit of exfoliating with a loofah so as to remove layers of dead skin and make way for new healthy skin cells.3. Make moisturizer your daily companionNeedless to say, choose a really good moisturizer to keep the skin moisturized and soft. Pay special attention to the exposed parts (and the most affected areas) like your hands, nails, feet and lips. Keep them well moisturized at all times. Use a lip balm to keep your lips soft and supple.4. Sunscreen is not just for summersWear a sunscreen when you step out in the open. In fact, it should be a part of your daily routine throughout the year and especially during the winters. This is the time when it may seem that you don’t need protection from the sun but you really do!5. Avoid excess use of deodorantsAs you hardly tend to sweat during winter, it’s best to restrict the usage of deodorants which contain high alcohol content. These products tend to strip away the skin’s moisture leaving your skin dry. Go for alcohol-free products instead.6. Conditioner is a mustSince you don’t sweat much in winter, don’t shampoo too often as it may dry out the scalp and hair. Use a mild shampoo and lukewarm water as very hot water can be harmful to your hair and scalp. And don’t forget the conditioner. If you want to go natural, coconut milk is an excellent conditioner.7. Oil your hair regularlyHowever busy your schedule is, don’t skip the oil your hair needs. It will help regulate the blood circulation and keep your scalp moisturized. 8. Style wiselySay no to hair dryers/ flat irons/ curl irons. These hair styling instruments work on the principle of heat, which when used during winters make matters worse. Instead use the cool setting of the dryer which though may take longer to dry but it would retain the moisture. Choose wooden hair brushes or combs instead of plastic. This is to fight the static hair caused by absence of moisture. If it fits in your schedule and budget, visit a good salon for protein treatment.9. Cover with careWhile woolen caps, scarves and stoles may make a style statement, it can also be the cause of hair breakage especially at the nape of your neck or forehead. Don’t try to be over-protective by wearing them tightly around your head. Leave sufficient space for air circulation in the scalp.
