Uterine fibroids are benign tumour growths that originate from the muscle layers of the uterus and are almost always non-cancerous. Fibroids occur in women in the childbearing age group. Fibroids are growths of smooth muscle and can vary from the size of a bean to as large as a melon.

There are four types of fibroids, characterized by their location in the uterus:

  • Intramural: Located in the wall of the uterus, this is the most common type.
  • Subserosal fibroids: Located outside the wall of the uterus but underneath the tissue layer that surrounds the uterus. They can develop into pedunculated fibroids (stalks) and become quite large.
  • Submucosal fibroids: Located in the muscle beneath the lining of the uterus wall. This type can protrude into the cavity of the uterus.
  • Cervical fibroids: Located in the neck of the womb (the cervix).

In most cases Uterine fibroid are asymptomatic, but when symptoms are present they are as follows:

  • Anaemia (as a result of heavy periods)
  • A backache
  • Constipation
  • Discomfort in the lower abdomen (especially if fibroids are large)
  • Frequent urination
  • Heavy, painful periods
  • Pain in the legs
  • Painful sex
  • Swelling in the lower abdomen (especially if fibroids are large)

Other possible symptoms of uterine fibroids include:

  • Labour problems
  • Pregnancy problems
  • Fertility problems
  • Repeated miscarriages

Some Unknown Facts:

  • Till now it is not known why women develop uterine fibroids. During a women's reproductive years there is high levels Estrogen and Progesterone. When estrogen levels are high fibroids tend to swell up like in pregnancy and again when estrogen levels are down fibroids tend to shrink like after menopause. From this, we can say that estrogen level has an effect on fibroids.
  • Another interesting fact is that estrogen is closely linked with women's emotional well-being. Depression and anxiety affect women in their estrogen-producing years more often than men or postmenopausal women. Estrogen is also linked to mood disruptions that occur only in women -- premenstrual syndrome, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and postpartum depression.
  • Emotions have a big role in maintaining stasis in our body. Many of the health disorders in our life are psychosomatic. It plays a big role in maintaining hormonal balance in a female. Many times it is seen that in many females problems like Amenorrhoea, PCOS, etc have a history of depression, anxiety, fright or some kind of emotional trauma from which the problems have started.

Homoeopathy and Uterine fibroids:

In Homoeopathy we treat the person and not the disease, so there are no specific remedies for fibroids. Best results are obtained by Constitutional treatment in which all symptoms of both physical and mental level are considered. Personally, I advise all patients reading this article to state all their symptoms, and also important not to hide any history of emotional upset, mental trauma from their physicians.

Homoeopathic Medicines For Uterine Fibroid:

Following are the commonest homoeopathic medicines used for Fibroids with their indications:

  • Fraxinus Americana: It is a natural homoeopathic medicine for treating fibroid where excessive bearing down sensations accompanies the menstrual flow. This medicine is also effective if cramps in feet accompany the menstrual bleeding
  • Aurum Mur Natronatum: This medicine has more power over uterine fibroid more than any other remedy. Generally left sided fibroid, feeling as if the uterus has filled up the whole abdomen, with palpitations.
  • Trillium Pendulum: It is a very good remedy for fibroid. Indicated in women who have heavy bleeding with excessive pain in hips.
  • Thlaspi Bursa Pastoris: It is yet another homoeopathic medicine for treating fibroid uterus. This medicine can be prescribed in the cases wherein the menses appear very frequently, and at short intervals. In most cases, the patient has not yet recovered from one period and the next period starts. The severe cramping pain in uterus and back during menses can also be treated with this medicine.

Other Remedies are mainly constitutional remedies like Calcarea carb, Phosphorous, Pulsatilla, Thuja, Natrum Mur, Medorrhinum, Ignatia etc.

I would like to add that all these medicines are commonly used, there are many more medicines for fibroids, and that self-medication will never give you cure as the best indication of the medicines lies with the physician.
