When Snehal woke up the morning, the motion of turning his neck brought about a sudden attack of giddiness – so much so that he could not stand up and had to lie down again. The whole room was whirling around him and he had to close his eyes. He felt slightly nauseous. He called out urgently to his wife who rushed him to the nearest hospital. At the Emergency Room of the hospital he was told it could be a serious cardiac problem or a serious neurological problem. He was admitted to the ICU and many expensive tests, including Echo Cardiography, MRI brain and blood tests were carried out. Though he felt better soon after this attack he was kept in the hospital for a further two days. The bill was huge.

The cause of this sudden onset of giddiness was a common condition called ‘Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo’ (BPPV). One of the commonest cause of acute peripheralvertigo, BPPV can be diagnosed by a simple bedside test and expensive tests are not needed. Neither is any expensive medication required. A simple manoeuvre cures it.

Sudden dramatic episodes of giddiness are almost alwaysassociated with an ENT problem. These could commonly be either BPPV, Vestibular Neuronitis, Meniere’s Disease, or Labyrinthitis – all ENT Disorders which are diagnosed easily  and with simple tests by the ENT Specialist.

However, Cervical Spondylosis is not known to cause giddiness.

So, the next time you or your near one has a sudden episode of giddiness, especially if associated with nausea/ vomiting – kindly rush straight to the nearest hospital and ask for an ENT Specialist.
