Sinus, the commonly used term for sinusitis, is usually a chronic problem faced by many individuals. Sinuses are the air-filled cavities in the bones of the skull and are situated in the forehead, nose and cheeks. The inflammation of the tissue lining these sinuses is called sinusitis. It is commonly associated with a stuffy nose, frequent cold and headache.

Ayurvedic medicines and Panchakarma therapy cure the disease of its roots. Panchakarma therapy like Vaman (emesis) and Nasya (nasal drops) followed by Ayurvedic medicines according to the Prakruti or body type of the individual can help completely cure this problem.

However, here are some natural remedies to fight the chronic sinus problem.

  1. Jala Neti - However weird the process of Jala Neti may seem, it is by far the best and most effective natural treatment I have come across in my career. It clears out the dirt, bacteria and mucus and reduces the inflammation of the inner lining of the sinuses. It can completely cure sinusitis if practised daily for a period of 5 to 6 months. It reprogrammes the body’s mechanism to fight against nasal infections thus giving lifelong immunity against sinusitis. Learn the procedure from your nearest Ayurvedic physician or a Yoga centre.

  • Lep - Applying a paste made of dry ginger powder, turmeric powder and ambehalad (wild turmeric/mango ginger/Curcuma aromatica) over the area of the sinuses regularly gets rid of the inflammation in the lining of the sinuses. Mix all three in equal quantities. Take half teaspoon of the mixture and mix in two teaspoons of water and heat till it becomes like a thick paste. Apply when warm. Wash off with warm water after 10-15 minutes.
  • Apply the Lep over the sinuses
  • Hot fomentation - Take some ajwain (carom seeds) in a small piece of cloth and tie it into a pouch. Take hot fomentation over the areas of the sinuses using this pouch by heating it in a hot pan.
  • Ajwain Potli/pouch
  • Ginger - Tulsi Juice- Crush 1/2 a tsp of ginger and 8-10 leaves tulsi. Squeeze out the juice and have it daily early in the morning on an empty stomach.
  • Ginger-Tulsi Juice with Honey
  • Pranayam - Kapalbhati, bhastrika and Anulom-Vilom Pranayam helps clear out the dirt, bacteria and the mucus from the respiratory tract thus helping in a speedy recovery. Doing it daily improves the immunity of the respiratory tract.
