Degenerative changes in joints and reduction in joint spaces are called Osteoarthritis.

CAUSES:

  • Age factor (common in old age)
  • Can be genetic
  • Due to increased weight (obese people)
  • Abnormal joints at birth
  • Gout
  • Diabetes
  • Other hormonal imbalance
  • History of repeated injury and/or joint surgery

SYMPTOMS:

  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • Decreased mobility

TREATMENT:

  • Analgesics and anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs)
  • Physiotherapy
  • Exercises (strengthening, mobility, swimming, walking, cycling)
  • Modalities (TENS, US, hot pack)

COMPLICATIONS:

  • The stiffness of joints
  • Secondary diseases
  • Prone to dislocation
