Garcinia cambogia is nothing but the  round tamarind  Indians,  especially Keralites use in their fish curry.   It is black in colour when dried, green -when raw, yellow- when ripe.   Hydroxy citric acid (HCA) is the active ingredient in it.  It inhibits the enzyme citrate lyase which is used to make fat from carbohydrates. This also act as an appetite suppressant.  However, unsupervised use of garcinia cambogia as a medicine for weight loss can be dangerous as studies have shown that it causes liver damage, high blood pressure, diarrhoea etc. All these quick fixes are no substitute for a healthy life style / behavior modification in losing excess weight. Consult a dietitian and get proper guidance from her for a balanced low calorie diet along with other life style changes.
