There are other ways to induce sleep which are obviously not synthetic such as gummies and pills. I'm sure you must have tried on your part but there's always more. Resorting to pills to fall asleep can do more harm than good.
Melatonin is a hormone for circadian Rythm. If your sleep cycle is disturbed then you should go for it once daily just before bed time. Variety of melatonin brands are available in the market with many dosage variations. It starts from 3mg to 10mg. I COVID outbreak it was used by many clinician for better immune response and was prescribed alot during COVID outbreak. Some studies says that if your sleep cycle is good then immune system will work better. So you can go for it and it is non dependent drug. Once circadian Rythm is improved then you can stop it.
