A mild increase in heart rate during certain stages of sleep (especially REM sleep) can be a normal physiological phenomenon. If you are sleeping well and do not wake up with symptoms such as palpitations, chest pain, breathlessness, dizziness, or syncope, the rise in pulse rate noted on a smartwatch or monitor may not be clinically significant. Melatonin 3 mg is primarily used to regulate sleep and improve sleep onset; it is not prescribed specifically to reduce heart rate during sleep. While melatonin may have a modest calming effect in some individuals, it should not be expected to treat sleep-related heart rate variations
Next Steps
If your doctor has advised melatonin, take it as prescribed. If you are concerned about persistent episodes of tachycardia, discuss with your physician whether further evaluation such as ECG, Holter monitoring, thyroid function tests, or assessment for sleep disorders is needed
Health Tips
Seek medical attention if you develop sustained palpitations, chest discomfort, breathlessness, dizziness, or fainting.
