Oil pulling is an ancient preparation inherent in Ayurvedic medicine that uses natural substances to clean and detoxify oral cavity. Enthusiasts of oil pulling, also called Gandusha, claim that toxins and bacteria in the body build up in the mouth and swishing oil in mouth will draw out these impurities. It has the added outcome of whitening teeth naturally.
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling is the practice of swishing oils from plants in the mouth to produce health benefits.
Does oil pulling work?
Well, yes. For example, a study published in the Indian Journal of Dental Research 2009 suggested swishing with sesame oil reduced plaque and lowered microorganisms in the plaque of adolescents with plaque-induced gingivitis.
How to oil pull?
1. Put 1-2 teaspoons of oil (sesame/coconut) into the mouth.
2. Swish for 10-15 minutes. The oil will get thicker and milky as it gets mixed with saliva and it should be creamy-white when spit out.
3. Rinse well with warm water.
Is oil pulling safe?
All of the oils that are often used are completely edible and considered to be healthy so they aren’t problematic when swished in the mouth. The only potential danger is if the oil is swallowed after it has absorbed any bacteria or toxins from the mouth.
What oil should be used for pulling?
Sesame oil is recommended and it is also the most well studied and considered safe for those who are not allergic to sesame seeds. Although coconut oil is also effective at removing certain bacteria from the mouth, including the Streptococcus mutans bacteria that is known for causing dental caries.
