What is rehabilitation?

Rehabilitation is the restoration of optimal form & function.

Why is rehabilitation important?

The process of rehabilitation should start as soon as possible after an injury. The ultimate goal of rehabilitation is to limit the extent of injury , reduce impairment & functional loss.

Have you injured yourself and thinking about what to do next?

  1. Avoid aggravation.
  2. The therapeutic exercises should begin as soon as possible. The sooner you begin the rehabilitation program ,the sooner you can return to full activity.

What does the rehabilitation program look like?

Your rehabilitation program would consist of:-

  1. Pain management : through use of therapeutic modalities like ultrasound which will bring down swelling ; help in healing of injured tissues & reduce pain.
  2. Flexibility management : Injury can result in decreased range of motion due to wound contraction , muscle spasm , inflammation , swelling , pain.Flexibility training helps in improving range of motion using stretching techniques.
  3. Strength & Endurance : Injuries could result in weakness. Hence strength training forms an integral part of rehabilitation. But is only strength enough? With injury the capacity of strength to last or to withstand wear and tear is also affected; hence endurance training is also important.
  4. Proprioception(position-movement sensation): Loss of proprioception occurs with injuries to ligament , tendons & joints.
  5. Functional rehabilitation: All rehabilitation programs should take into account the movements & activities required when you return to your field post-injury.
