Perhaps nothing is more gratifying for cosmetic patients than having an immediate correction ofrhytides or scars as a result of the injection of dermal filler.

Since its approval in 1981, bovine collagen had been the only US Food and Drug Administration(FDA)–approved dermal filler more than a decade. Quickly, this dermal filler gained popularity andwas marketed under the name Zyderm I. This dermal filler was found to be extremely effective forthe correction of fine lines and shallow scars, with results often lasting 3 months.

The perfect dermal filler in today’s market would be expensive, safe, painless to inject, hypoallergenic, and long lasting. In addition, it should be like a "lunch-time procedure for mypatients," Thus, this segment of cosmetic surgery has been the fastest growing for the past decadewith interesting fillers in the Indian market like Resytlane,Perlane,Juvederm,Esthelis, etc all beingreadily available.

Most common content of a filler is Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is the most prominent glycosaminoglycan in the skin. Hyaluronic acid potently bindsto water and, when injected into the skin, volumizes, softens, and hydrates the skin. In addition tothese benefits, it plays a role in cell growth, membrane receptor function, and adhesion. Hence, giving the youthful look again quips Dr.Bhardwaj.

Hyaluronic acid stabilizes intercellular structures and produces the viscoelastic network for collagenand elastin fibers to bind together. Because hyaluronic acid is identical in all species, the risk ofallergy is remote.

Precautions

The adverse effects of Juvederm are similar to those seen with Restylane,Esthelis and Perlane. Likeall of the hyaluronic acid filling agents that are FDA approved. One may see erythema, swelling, andbruising. If injected too superficially, a bluish effect for a long time as a hue may arise and nodulesmay appear. Also, in very badly injected procedures a granuloma can be formed which is the worstcomplication of the filler and always leaves a bad scar behind.

Are you suitable for a filler?

In your Medical assessment always tell your injecting dermatologist if you are on any kind ofmedications as risk of bruising is more when there is any bleeding disorders, uncontrolledhypertension, or when on anticoagulants like aspirin, clopidogrel or warfarin.

Always get checked for hypersensitivity to lignocaine.

Active infection near the site of injection

If you are suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Mystenia Gravis, Neurologicaldisorders then NO FILLER SHOULD BE TAKEN EVER.
