HELLO GUYS

TODAY i want to help you by making you know about BMI  and in turn knowing in which category you fall

  1. Underweight
  2. Healthy weight
  3. Overweight
  4. Obese

You must be a wondering WHAT IS BMI ??

BMI is body mass index. (BMI) BMI is used as a screening tool to indicate whether a person is underweight, overweight, obese or a healthy weight for their height. If a person's BMI is out of the healthy BMI range, their health risks may increase significantly.

The benefits of maintaining a healthy weight include:

  1. Running from obese to healthy
  2. An exercise plan can help you maintain a healthy BMI.
  3. Fewer joint and muscle pains
  4. Increased energy and ability to join in more activities
  5. Improved regulation of bodily fluids and blood pressure
  6. Reduced burden on the heart and circulatory system
  7. Improved sleep patterns
  8. Reductions in blood triglycerides, blood glucose, and risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  9. Reduced risk for heart disease and certain cancers.

EXCESS WEIGHT increases how hard the heart has to work, it also raises blood pressure, blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels and lowers HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Excess weight can make a person more likely to develop diabetes.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES  that help you maintain a 3-5% weight loss are likely to result in clinically meaningful improvements in blood glucose, triglycerides and risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Greater weight loss can also help reduce blood pressure and improve blood cholesterol.

BMI IS NOT ACCURATE ENOUGH TO BE USED AS A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL. HOWEVER, IT IS USED AS A SCREENING TOOL TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL  WEIGHT PROBLEMS IN ADULTS.

A person may have a high BMI, yet to determine if this excess weight is a health risk, a health care provider would need to complete further assessments such as:

  1. Skinfold thickness measurements
  2. Evaluations of diet
  3. Physical activity
  4. Family history
  5. Other appropriate health screenings.

FORMULA TO CALCULATE

The formula to calculate BMI requires information about a person's height in meters and weight in kilograms. For weight in pounds and height in inches, there is a different formula, but due to rounding, it may not produce the exact same results.

The BMI formulas are:

BMI = weight (in kilograms) / height (in meters) ^2

                                            or

BMI = weight (in pounds) / height (in inches) ^2 * 703
