Although monsoon is a time for some to enjoy in the rain, it also brings with it a host of skin problems. One of the common skin problems in monsoon is fungus or athletes foot or ringworm. This happens because of continuous soggy skin and unhygienic socks and footwear. Dampness and friction is required for a fungus to form on the skin, hence the skin must be thoroughly dried and anti fungal powder applied .
Some youngsters are in the habit of changing socks and inner wear once in two or three days and this must be avoided at all costs. In those prone to fungal infections , anti fungal dusting powders like clotrimazole can be used regularly without any side effects. Keep your skin dry after you get wet in the rains and remember to wash all clothes properly and dry in the sun . If one has to dry in the shade preferably press all your clothes with a hot iron and then wear. Another common skin problem during this time is prickly heat, due to a change in weather conditions and the body not being able to adjust to it, the sweat glands get obstructed creating the itch and rash. For this, one can use calamine lotions, wear loose fitting clothes and take an antihistamine tablet. Avoid any activities that cause more body sweat and the prickly heat will subside.
Another issue is dandruff which increases in this climate. Dandruff should not be over treated and can be managed by simple shampoos. It is a myth that dandruff is a serious infection and may cause hair loss. Dandruff is caused by the body reacting abnormally to a normal fungus on the scalp. It only needs to be kept under control. Some people may get an aggravation of acne or pimples in monsoon. Be careful not to pick on these as it may lead to permanent scars. Also get it checked by your dermatologist who will prescribe effective antibiotics for the same. Avoid the temptation to use dettol or savlon or turmeric on the pimples, as it may lead to irritant dermatitis. Your face is your first impression, keep it clear and healthy. Also remember to wear a good sunscreen while going out especially for those allergic to UV rays. Even a little bit of sun exposure may trigger skin rashes. Don't forget that sunscreens have to be reapplied every 2 to 3 hours if one is going out.
Chapped lips are also common. Use petroleum jelly based creams and avoid licking the lips with saliva to moisturise it, as it may lead to lip lick dermatitis. Lip creams with sunscreens are also available. Due to excessive use of soaps in the monsoon, skin may become too dry. Its better to use a moisturising soap like glycerine soap and then hydrate the skin with moisturisers. Also drink plenty of water and juices and eat healthy food including vegetables. God sent us the rain to get relief from the scorching heat, let us strive to keep our body safe and enjoyable, without falling prey to illnesses.
