Sunscreen Can Protect Your Skin Against Skin Cancer and Premature Aging

Dr. Amrendra kumar, Dermatologist
Sunscreen can protect your skin against skin cancer and premature aging. However, it is not as effective unless it's applied correctly. Follow these tips when applying sunscreen:Choose a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher, is water resistant, and provides broad-spectrum coverage, which means it protects you from UVA and UVB rays. Follow these helpful tips when selecting a sunscreen.Apply sunscreen generously before going outdoors. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and protect you. If you wait until you are in the sun to apply sunscreen, your skin is unprotected and can burn.Use enough sunscreen. Most adults need at least one ounce of sunscreen, about the amount you can hold in your palm, to fully cover all exposed areas of your body. Rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin.Apply sunscreen to all bare skin. Remember your neck, face, ears, tops of your feet and legs. For hard‐to‐reach areas like your back, ask someone to help you or use a spray sunscreen. If you have thinning hair, either apply sunscreen to your scalp or wear a wide‐brimmed hat. To protect your lips, apply a lip balm with a SPF of at least 15.Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours to remain protected, or immediately after swimming or excessively sweating. People who get sunburned usually didn't use enough sunscreen, didn't reapply it after being in the sun, or used an expired product. Your skin is exposed to the sun's harmful UV rays every time you go outside, even on cloudy days and in the winter. So whether you are on vacation or taking a brisk fall walk in your neighborhood, remember to use sunscreen.

Enjoy a Beach Holiday!!! Skin Care in Summer for Acne Oily Skin

Dr. Prabha Acharya, Dermatologist
The advantage of having oily skin is that you won’t be getting premature wrinkles but controlling the oil can sometimes be a problem. Here are 9 quick tips to keep your skin oil-free throughout the day.The summer months are harsh on all skin types, but oily skin is more prone to pimples and break-outs. Its appearance becomes greasier making it look dull and lifeless. Summer time should be about fun in the sun, beach holidays and warm lazy brunches. Instead, you worry about blemishes and spots caused by sun damage, dust and grime that your oily skin attracts. Instead of damage control at a later date, take charge & learn how to keep your skin oil free with these simple preventive measures. With a few easy changes to your oily skin care routine, you can avoid hot weather-related side effects on your skin:1. Avoid the sun. Enjoy early morning beach activities and in the evening. The summer sun is your skin’s enemy! Not only does being outdoors in the sun hugely increase oil secretion, but you also end up exposing yourself to the harmful effects of UV rays. During the hours of 10 AM – 3 PM, the sun is at its strongest and most damaging, so have fun filled indoor activities with friends.2. Look for a gentle cleanser. Always test your cleanser before you buy and pick one that removes excessive oil without over drying the skin. 3. Wash your face correctly. Washing oily skin is tricky business as too little can spell disaster with an onslaught of spots while too much can strip your skin of its natural oils. Your T-zone most likely needs frequent washing while your cheeks tend to dry up, so being selective is key. Blotting papers can help you soak up the excess oil in problem areas without over stripping the moisture.4. Invest in a good sunscreen lotion. A water based matte sunscreen is a good choice for oily skin as it helps keep your face shine free and gives you the protection you need. Look for at least SPF 30++ for the best sunscreen effect!5. Go minimal on makeup. While it may feel like you can’t live without your foundation, in summers its best to keep it natural. Foundation and compact powders not only make you look older, but also clog pores. Even the best of foundations for oily skin will get runny when you perspire and adding extra products will only make your skin more prone to pimples. Instead, stick to tinted moisturizers or concealers and use water-based ones.6. Hydrate well. Drink plenty of water and juices so you are hydrated internally. Make sure you moisturise often with a water-based product to keep your skin supple. Whatever the formula, make sure your sunscreen and moisturiser contains oil-reducing salicylic or glycolicacid7. Watch what you eat. Vitamin A rich vegetables like carrots, spinach and so on help slow oil production. Go easy on the alcohol, spicy and fried food as they all dilate blood vessels and compound your oily skin woes. If you are tempted, limit yourself to one drink a night, and eat spicy foods no more than once a week.8. Give your skin some TLC. The best thing about summer skin care are all the fragrant fruity facials. Do your skin a favor and exfoliate with a delicious natural scrub once a week. Make a  cooling, oil-absorbing mask and pamper your skin silly.9. You can also try making a homemade scrub from honey and sugar. This scrub helps exfoliate skin naturally & moisturizes it as well. Be advised not to use any scrub on your face often, as it may dry out your face skin which is not a good thing.

Of course we all want healthy, glowing ,young and spotless skin but how many of us are really in love with it?Very few! The skin is the largest organ open to infection, sun, pollution, dust, wind and so on. Not only that, it also shows whatever changes happens internally like hormones, infection, nutritional problems and so on.Now you must be wondering how can you love your skin? Simply-Start by loving yourself- Exercise everyday. Use more frequently when in water or direct sunlight.Use the right product- Buy your skin care range after knowing your skin type, concerns (pimples, wrinkles, pigmentation) and even the weather you stay. e.g. maybe you have an oily skin and have not been using moisturizer thinking you don't need it. But if you stay long in AC or if the weather is dry and cold, you are bound to lose moisture and so definitely need one.Don't over exfoliate - nnecessary scrubbing your face everyday would not help those dead cell and would rather make your skin more dry, sensitive and crinkly.use a scrub once in 7-10 days only.Don't sleep with your make up on- You just got got back from a party or conference and you are dead tired but wait!do remove that make up before jumping in wont take more than 3 minutes but your skin would breath free.Use silk pillow covers- You may get less pores and wrinkling.using cotton covers would bring collagen changes.use right products, use proper amount of products, apply gentlyGet a good sleep- Good sleep can do miracles to your body including skin.people with under eye circles would agree with me.Don't pick on your pimples -zits are so annoying and of course you want to get rid of them the  moment you have one, but wait! Skin Talks

Dr. Anshul Jain, Dermatologist
Unwanted facial and body hair can be a source of distress for both men and women. Since the early 1990 laser has become a widely accepted and a safe method for treatment of excessive hair growth provided it is done by trained hands. Excerpts from the talk with Dr.Anshul Jain , M.D. (Skin) regarding myths about Laser Hair Removal.Q:Which is the best technology for laser hair reduction [LHR]?A: All over the world, Diode lasers are the gold standard for Laser Hair Reduction. There are other different lasers available like Nd:YAG and IPL but none meets the results as seen with Diode lasers.Q:Is Laser Hair Removal painful?A: There are systems which offer virtually painless hair removal, like SUPRANO PROTM  from ALMA LASERS, world’s first virtually painless laser hair removal system. With other laser machines, pin-pricking or mild stinging or a rubber band “snap” sensation can be felt during and after the procedure.Q: Are the results permanent? A: The SUPRANO PRO DIODE laser is US FDA for hair removal and permanent hair reduction on ALL skin types. It’s exclusive IN-MOTION technology with SapphireDualChill tip gives excellent results on all pigmented hair and all skin types-including tanned skin.Q: How the Diode laser works?A: It works by safely and gently heating the dermis to a temperature that damages the hair follicle and prevents re-growth, yet does not injure the surrounding skin.Q: Is the treatment very costly?A: No, it is much more economical in long-run when compared with use of hair removing cream or waxing.Q: How many sessions will be needed? A: Six is the AVERAGE number of sessions. Depending on your skin type, hormone fluctuations, and your own individual hair growth cycles, you may require more sessions.Q: What are the expected results?  A: Most patients experience an 80-90% reduction in the amount of hair in a given area; it may be 90-99% for underarms and pubic areas. Normally there are just a few very fine hairs that are left.Q: How frequent the treatment sessions are?A: The gap between two sessions is 3-6 weeks. Hair grows in three stages and we try to synchronize the hair growth to treat as many hairs as possible with each laser treatment. All hair are not growing at the same time. Anagen, stage of hair growth, is most susceptible to the laser treatment as it absorbs more energy because it contains more pigment than the other surrounding hair.Q: Can all areas of the body be treated with the laser?A: Yes, with the exception of the eyelashes due to the proximity of the eyes.

Seven Foods You Ever Need for Naturally Glowing Healthy Skin

Dr. Sharad Kulkarni, Ayurveda
Here is a fun fact! Our skin is the largest, heaviest and fastest growing organ of the human body. All the cosmetic creams and lotions available in the market put together are just not enough to give it the desired look and texture. To enrich the skin, supply it with vital nutrients from inside and enjoy the natural glow. These foods will replenish your parched skin with all the essentials required for the shiny and smooth skin that you have always wanted. Ayurveda is embedded with such unique secrets which are now being scientifically explored.TomatoesIt has been scientifically proved that tomatoes are a storehouse of antioxidants and vitamin C. Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, the one which imparts the classic red colour to the tomatoes is a blessing for the skin. It is a natural sunscreen that protects against sunburns caused by UV rays. Therefore, eat at least one raw tomato, or juice it up daily or add its pulp to veggies while you cook them to have a naturally glowing skin.Pumpkin The beta-carotene present in pumpkins converts to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is like an internal exfoliator that brushes off the old and dead skin cells and helps to regenerate new skin cells. Thus, it removes away the dryness of the skin. Therefore, cook it or have it by itself to enjoy soft and radiant skin.Carrot The carotenoids or the beta-carotenes present in the carrot, basically vitamin A again, prevent sun tan, which keeps the skin glowing. In addition, it fights the wrinkles and helps keep the skin smooth. Therefore, chop the carrots long and have it in your salad daily or instead have its juice for some shiny, healthy skin.AppleThis is an all-time favourite fruit that is full of vitamin C which keeps the skin firm and prevents its premature ageing. Make it a point to eat an apple daily to ensure smooth and glowing skin. An apple a day more than keeps the doctor away!Spinach The antioxidants present in spinach have an anti-inflammatory effect, which flush out toxins and make the skin less prone to pimples. Either soup up the spinach or grind it to make a tasty curry to give your skin a little health treatment. All this awesomeness in spinach is courtesy its high content of vitamin A!Walnuts These are a storehouse of omega-3 fatty acids as well as vitamin E that preserve shine of the skin, making it look young and smooth. Have a couple walnuts daily in the morning or use them to munch on as a mid meal snack to reap the benefits of this amazing nut.Almonds These are a rich source of vitamin E. Research has shown that vitamin E protects the skin cells from UV damage and fights the cell damage caused by the free radicals. Therefore, munch on six to eight almonds daily and feel the difference in your skin.

Taking Care of That Excess Skin

Dr. Harikiran Chekuri
Losing weight is an achievement indeed. You need to put in a lot of effort to reduce that extra flab from your body. But weight loss can be disappointing at times, when you see loose skin hanging around your body which is nearly impossible to get rid of. It’s like winning a war but losing a battle. However there are solutions to this. Here are some very useful but easy tips that can help you to find an answer to that excess skin.Don’t lose much – Yes, you’ve got that right, don’t lose too much weight at one go. Let your body get adjusted to your weight loss regime. This will help your skin retain its elasticity and not shrink rapidly. Take the suggestion of a specialist who can guide you into a perfect weight loss plan that won’t allow your skin to lose its elasticity.Keep your skin hydrated – Drink a lot of water. At least drinking minimum 6 glasses of water is a must. If you can drink more, it’s always better. This allows your skin to remain hydrated and tight. So while you are on your weight loss spree, make sure you drink a plenty or water to prevent the lose skin.Take up weight training – Weight training at least thrice weekly helps building an extra layer of muscles underneath your skin. It is very important if you are on a strict diet. Losing fat from your body often leads to loosening the layer of muscle underneath your skin. Having an extra padding of muscles will restrain sagging skin. Thus, you will never have those ugly sagging skins even after you shed weight drastically.Moisturize your skin – Apply lot of moisturizer that contains Vitamin E. This helps in skin toning and regeneration of new skin cells. You may also use recommended fruit oils or Coconut oils for massaging your skin as well. This will not only tighten up loose skin but also keep the wrinkles away.Belly toning exercise – Most of the sagging skin can be seen around your belly, hips and waist. Hence, it is important to go for belly toning exercises like crunches, air biking, leg rising, sit ups, side bridges and pelvic thrust. These are easy to do workouts that take only 15-20 minutes to perform. Have them in your workout list for at list three to five days of the week.Massage – Get a massage weekly or bi-weekly. This will help in proper blood circulation and add a glow of youth to your skin. You will feel relaxed as your muscles and skin gets toned. Consult a professional and pamper yourself with great body massage. However, the loose skin greatly depends on the individual and may take time to heal. Sometimes even after trying out everything, you fail to get rid of those hanging skin bags. This calls for cosmetic surgery that can help you to get rid of unwanted skin bags completely. Look out for an expert aesthetic surgeon around you for further guidance and assistance.
