Diabetes and Oral health

Insulin is a hormone which is necessary to maintain the level of glucose in your blood. Diabetes mellitus is a disorder due todefect in secretion of insulin.

Long term uncontrolled diabetes mellitus can affect multiple organs:1.      Cardiovascular.      Retinopathy3.      Nephropathy4.      Neuropathy5.

Periodontitis Periodontitis manifests as loosening of teeth, bad breath and bleeding gums. It is common in individuals with long term hyperglycaemia.  In such condition, there is an increase in molecules that have a complex bond with glucose molecules. Over time, these accumulated products bind to collagen fibres present in gums and become resistant to breakdown. Eventually older collagen becomes brittle resulting weakening of tooth-gum attachment. Additionally, a chronically increased blood glucose level results in increased bacterial load and inflammation. Bad breath is common in diabeticpatients due reduced saliva and increased bacterial and fungal infections.

All these conditions are detrimental to general health and social discomfort. So, it is necessary to promptly address oral symptoms like bleeding gums, pain, bad breath and loosening of teeth.
