Detox Diet? How Effective Are They?

Ms. Tehzeeb, Dietitian/Nutritionist
It isn’t often that we stumble upon literature which is accurate, witty and hard-hitting all at the same time. But when we do, we ensure that we share it with you multiple times! So just incase you missed it in our monthly newsletter, here it is again.http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/dec/05/detox-myth-health-diet-science-ignoranceYou MUST read through all of it but incase you didn’t, below are some excerpts from the article itself:WHAT IS IT?“Detoxing – the idea that you can flush your system of impurities and leave your organs squeaky clean and raring to go – is a scam. It’s a pseudo-medical concept designed to sell you things”“It is a word being hijacked by entrepreneurs, quacks and charlatans to sell a bogus treatment that allegedly detoxifies your body of toxins you’re supposed to have accumulated”WE DON'T NEED IT BECAUSE:“The healthy body has kidneys, a liver, skin, even lungs that are detoxifying as we speak”. “There is no known way – certainly not through detox treatments – to make something that works perfectly well in a healthy body work better”DETOX GIMMICKS:“Then there’s colonic irrigation. Its proponents will tell you that mischievous plaques of impacted poo can lurk in your colon for months or years and pump disease - causing toxins back into your system. Pay them a small fee, though, and they’ll insert a hose up your bottom and wash them all away. Unfortunately for them – and possibly fortunately for you – no doctor has ever seen one of these mythical plaques, and many warn against having the procedure done, saying that it can perforate your bowel”“Some colon - cleansing tablets contain a polymerising agent that turns your faeces into something like a plastic, so that when a massive rubbery poo snake slithers into your toilet you can stare back at it and feel vindicated in your purchase”WHY DO WE LEAN TOWARD IT?“When most of us utter the word detox, it’s usually when we’re bleary eyed and stumbling out of the wrong end of a heavy weekend”“Many of our consumer decisions are made in ignorance and supposition, which is rarely challenged or informed. A lot of marketing drip-feeds that idea, surreptitiously”“It sort of keys into something that we all would love to have – a simple remedy that frees us of our sins, so to speak. It’s nice to think that it could exist but unfortunately it doesn’t”TAKE - HOME MESSAGE:“The ultimate lifestyle ‘detox’ is not smoking, exercising and enjoying a healthy balanced diet”

Detox Diets for Weight Loss - Side Effects

Ms. Swati Kapoor, Dietitian/Nutritionist
Detox diets for weight loss are very popular, but they can have serious side effects. A British woman suffered permanent brain damage after a week of a prescribed detox diet. That's not the standard, but you must be aware of the health effects these weight loss detox diets.First, there is no scientifically proven reason to put yourself on a detox diet. Detox diets are nutritionally imbalanced. Some of them keep you on a liquid diet, depriving your body of basic nutrients. Others suggest herbal laxatives and colonics. Our bodies have natural detoxification methods that work very well, so we do we really need these?Because these detox diets are extremely low calorie diets, people experience common symptoms such as tiredness and lethargy. Long term detox diets can cause headaches, constipation, bad breath, and your metabolic rate will slow down, thus you will burn less fat. Also, since these detox diets are so restrictive on calories, your body goes into a starvation mode- it will store all your consumed calories as fat, and burn muscle. To cleanse your colon, increase fiber in your diet. The diuretics and laxatives suggested in detox diets increase your waste output, and can cause severe dehydration. Also, they can change your electrolyte levels which may result in serious health problems. These diets can weaken your body's immune system to fight infection and inflammation.Read about Atkins diet, GM diet and other diets- along with their fad diet side effects. Many people use these diets to lose weight. They do experience fast weight loss, but due to the nature of the diet, once they return to their normal life, they regain the weight back. The key really is to adopting a healthy diet that is long term. And a healthy diet does not mean boiled veggies and raw fruits. It just needs to be balanced. Also the focus should be on fat loss instead of weight loss and being healthy.

Detox The Post Festival Guilt!

Ms. Nisha Singh, Dietitian/Nutritionist
Once the thrill and rush of the festival season is over, it leaves in its wake a feeling of guilt and regret. Why guilt and regret? I am sure, you are aware at what I am hinting. No matter how hard one tries, festivities do make us their victim and take their toll on us. One does succumb to the allure of the various sweets, fried savories and rich food. So, post the Diwali Dhamaka, let’s detox:Drink lots of water: The easiest and most effective route for elimination of toxins is sweat and urine. Adequate hydration will help in this process. A squeeze of lemon juice in the water will help in balancing the PH levels of the body. It helps in regulation of the digestive tract and also helps in fat metabolism.Reduce the intake of salt, sugar and refined flour as by now your system is overloaded with these. Make fresh and seasonal fruits your choice for snack items. Change your dinner time menu to a bowl of soup and salad. The lighter you eat, the more rested your system will feel.Sip on 2 cups of green tea through the day.Including 45 minutes of exercise and 15 minutes of meditation daily will not only help reduce the systemic as well as mental stress levels.Getting at least 8 hours of sleep will help you to feel fresher and energetic.Get a hot oil body massage done once a week to improve and regulate your circulation and lymphatic drainage. Most people assume detoxification diets mean starving, depriving, fasting or skipping meals. On the contrary, it is more about eating healthy, natural and lighter foods. So, use these tips to detoxify and give rest to your body and get back on the health wagon!

When Did You Detox Last? Holistic Detox Part I

Dr. Rani Bhutada, Homeopath
Bring back the balance- Revive your ‘Tree of Life’!Are you thinking about trying to detox but are unsure exactly what the benefits may be?As each day pass by, it leaves behind a ‘residue’ in our mind and body. A good diet, optimum exercise and happy moments take us well through the life. But things do not fall in place correctly each day! The unwanted ‘residue’ turn into ‘toxins’ when it cease to nurture our body & mind & pile up enough to cause a ‘disease’.‘Detoxification’ brings about a spectrum of positive changes when done correctly, that is to say---in a healthy, safe and controlled environment. It lifts YOU both internally ----which boosts your immunity and senses & externally--- beautifying your looks, too young for your age!!To count your age backwards, let’s count the number of reasons to.....DETOX! 1. Removes toxins from the body.Long-term exposure to toxins (environmental pollutants, cancer-causing chemicals, preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial waste) affects our metabolism, behaviour, immune system, and leads to disease. They are stored in tissues and cells throughout the body, including the brain, often for years – yikes!2. Prevents chronic diseases.Environmental toxins are responsible for many cancers, neurological diseases, heart disease, strokes... you name it. Our bodies do have a built-in detox function to deal with these dangers, but those systems are constantly overloaded! Detoxing assists and improves what our bodies are trying to do naturally.3. Enhances immune system function.A compromised immune system makes us vulnerable to colds and flu, affecting our quality of life and productivity. Regular detoxification helps strengthen immune system functioning and fights off infection.4. Helps lose weight.Toxins affect the body's natural ability to burn fat, leading to weight gain. Diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure are directly linked to weight issues. Detoxification helps the body to get rid of toxins stored in fat cells and increases metabolism as well.5. Slows premature aging.Detoxification sweeps the body of free radicals and heavy metals partially responsible for aging. This in turn helps to increase nutrient absorption, including antioxidants and vitamins that help fight oxidative stress.6. Improves quality of life.Simply put, our bodies don't function very well when they're loaded with toxins. We may have joint pain, headaches, digestive disorders, sleep problems, and lack of energy. Depression may be eased and memory may be improved as a result of detoxification!7. Increases vital energy. You will have more mental, physical, and emotional energy after detoxification. People tend to sleep better and need less of it.8. Improves skin quality.Diet and environmental toxins undeniably affect skin. ‘Detox’ improves acne, and repairs & strengthens worn and split hair, takes care of brittle unhealthy nails. It endows us a natural, healthy glow.9. Enhances mental and emotional clarity. When the body's systems are aligned, a shift also occurs with our mental and emotional states. We can deal with more stress when we're clear and grounded. We can make better decisions, analyze accurately, see things differently, respond unfavourable situations amicably.10. Restores balance of our body's systems. Our digestive, nervous, and hormonal systems were designed to work together to achieve optimum health. This is what our bodies want to do! When we overload them with toxins and unhealthy foods, these systems don't work as well as they should and we get sick.Reviving one’s ‘Tree of life’ is a transformation of a person by five way detoxification of body on mental, physical, emotional and spiritual planes.Detox to rebound health, for a new...YOU!

Quick Detox Tips Post Diwali

Ms. Mitalee Doshi, Dietitian/Nutritionist
1. Drink plenty of water: Water helps in flushing out toxins from your system, so drink at least 10 glasses of water a day. Have nimboo pani with ginger and tulsi in the morning.2. Sip some Green Tea: It works great for detoxification and cleansing. Two cups a day, one in the morning and one in the evening, will make a lot of difference and you will feel the change too.3. Exercise: The festive season has come and gone, so slip into those running shoes and go for a brisk walk or run. You can start here and move on to sit-ups and other exercises to tone the body. Cycling is a good option too.4. Avoid sugar: Say no to sugar for a week. If you are really looking forward to detoxification, this is a must-do step. If you crave desserts, eat fruit salad or mix fresh fruits with curd or have dates or jaggery.5. Foods to try: Have more raw foods. Have a variety of seasonal fruits and salads daily. You can eat good food and at regular intervals. Just ensure that it’s not oily or fried. Milk, curd, pulses and daals need to be a vital part of your meals. Avoid red meat for a couple of weeks for a complete detoxification. Eat every two hours so that you don’t crave unhealthy foods.6. Pamper yourself: If possible, visit a spa or salon. Pampering yourself is also a sort of indulgence and if you are giving up on sinful foods, you might give your body something special instead. A nice spa treatment or massage will make you feel rejuvenated and relaxed.

Does Detox Diets Work ?

Dr. Aneeta Verma, Physiotherapist
Our body is made up tiny cells and these cells form tissues and these tissues form organs and every organ , gland , the muscle of the body work together , and play their specific role to keep us healthy . The liver plays the most important role. “Liver” is an old English word for ‘life’. Chinese call it “the father of all organs”. In Ayurveda, it is a pitta organ.  Sometimes called the engine of the body, the liver has many important roles to play in digesting, metabolising and manufacturing essential compounds. For instance, the liver is responsible for converting clear plasma (Rasa Dhatu) to blood (Rakta Dhatu). It is the liver's job to scan and identify toxins in the plasma  and store them so they don't enter the blood. This maintains the purity of the blood by keeping  impurities, from mixing with it.But that's not all. The liver secretes bile, using it to break down and digest fatty acids; it produces blood-clotting factors and at the same time creates protective elements that keep blood clots from blocking the circulatory system. It converts sugar into glycogen and stores it for use by the muscles in the form of glucose energy; it synthesises proteins and cholesterol. The liver is also the place the body stores valuable trace elements such as iron, copper and Vitamins A, D and B12.So, we are only responsible for choosing what you put into your body. Liver toxins can be found in the food around you and that you love to eat.Peoples are taking treatments for a number of problems constipation, allergies, skin rashes, high cholesterol, irritable bowel, high blood sugar asthma, not knowing that the real problem stems from your liver.  This beautiful large detoxifying organ is sluggish, clogged, ailing, and unhappy. And it is all the result of poor diet and lifestyle.Behind this fact of poor lifestyle, there is good news too this organ is the true father as it is very forgiving. The optimum liver function can be restored and even a damaged liver can be regenerated.  It's all a matter of knowing what to do and what not to do . Nowadays it is not so easy to regain a happy liver as it was 100 years back , now we are surrounded by pollutants all around not just outside , but inside our home all , chemicals have become part of our life and our liver is not designed to deal with chemicals and pollutants. So it’s a good idea to do detoxification of our body with the natural system , under the guidance of a dietician or person deal in naturopathy and wellness. In our ancient times, people use to fasts for more than a week in every 6 month that was scientifically a process of rejuvenation and detoxification of the liver. The liver is designed to operate with clocklike precision. At about two to clock in the morning it begins to sort out the nutrients received from the last meal . if that meal has been light and not eaten too late in the day your liver will easily manage , sending sufficient bile to the gallbladder for next stage of digestion . on the other hand if you will eat heavy meal and too late in night then liver have to do overtime in your MNC without any extra charge , and you will feel grumpy and complain I am not a morning person , actually you are “liverish”. Your liver is overburden , then you get a cup of coffee or tea to get a jump start , but this habit compromises the liver even more . you may then bread butter or junk or fried, oily and all Packed and fancy food from the market or so-called supermarket sound so trendy but full of trans fat , chemical additives , your liver will eventually give up .Some of the signals of liver anguish include High BP Elevated cholesterol , Weight  gain,  Potbelly Cellulite, Indigestion, Abdominal bloating Irritable bowel syndrome Eczema , acne rosacea , pimples Chronic fatigue syndrome Brownish spots on the skin (liver spots)Hot flushes ,Compromised pancreas,  Depression,  Irritability. The list goes on Most of in our Indian culture treat these symptoms with drugs and carry on their liver-destroying lifestyles. Fibre is an essential ingredient for a well-functioning liver, so eat whole fruits, vegetables (raw if can be consumed) and fibres need more water as it soaks up water ten to thirty times its weight, so consume lots of water.Whole grain, good fat, orange, carrots, beet root, turnip, whole fruits, basil leaves, broccoli etc good for the liver. Eating alkaline fruit empty stomach boosts up the functioning of liver and metabolism. Cook fresh and eat fresh, keep salad with the major meal, take dinner early and it should be light and healthy. Those who are suffering from any symptom of liver distress can adopt liver – cleansing diet.  We all should adopt the common Russian greeting, “how’s your liver today?”

Disadvantages of Fasting for Weight Loss

Ms. Swati Kapoor, Dietitian/Nutritionist
Fasting has been around for a while. Mostly used for religious purposes it is also considered a technique to lose weight. Some people also use it as a detox mechanism but the fact is there are organs & natural foods that are already doing that job.Do you think then fasting is the right & effective approach to weight loss?Let us explain through facts whether fasting is good for you or not. There are different definitions of fasting. Some people fast without any foods or water at a stretch while some are flexible and allow themselves to have raw fruits, water & caffeine. Fasts lasting a day or two are unlikely to be dangerous for most healthy adults. But the following people like the elderly, anyone with a chronic disease, pregnant women, and children fall under the high risk category and are advised against any type of fasting.Fasting can be dangerous if followed for prolonged periods, anywhere from three days to a month. What happens to your body when you fast? You lose weight. But that’s because you have drastically cut down on your calories. Also you are not losing fat this instance instead that change on the weighing scale is reflecting the loss of water in your body. Remember our body is 70 % water and that’s why on a fast one loses the “water weight” which comes instantly back the minute eating is resumed. Fasting also slows down the metabolism that’s the reason why a lot of people tend to put on weight even when they have been on prolonged periods of fasting instead of really losing it.Next time you are thinking about fasting to lose weight you might want to reconsider going through that route especially when the end results can this discouraging. The healthy and the most effective way to lose weight are to get into a routine of healthy diet and regular exercise. Following a balanced routine not only leads to a healthy weight loss but also a fit and toned body.Basic Eating Rules to follow include:-Plan your meals in advance. This will help you manage healthier meals.-Don’t give too much gap between your meals. Giving too much gap will lead to binging and snacking on unhealthy food.-Eating too often might burden your digestive system and will not really help you keep the weight off in the long run.-Don’t eat if you are stressed or exhausted.
