Easy Relief Tips for Constipation in Children

Dr. Saurabh Kumar, Pediatrician
Constipation is a condition whenPassing motion becomes difficult or it’s not regularMotion is hard and there is a sense of incomplete bowel emptyingLong standing constipation may lead to many serious health issues like fissure, piles, urinary tract infection, fecal impaction [ fecal matter changes to stone like consistency]. And slightly less serious issues like decreased appetite, acidity, increased gas and abdominal distension. Though this blog is about children but whatever I am talking is relevant even to adults. How to relieve constipationI will be discussing this under four headingsDiet modificationAdequate water intakeMedicationProper positioning of the child while passing motion1. Diet modificationThis is the most important aspect of treatment, we have to add more fibre in the diet as fibre helps in holding water in the intestine thus leading to soft motion. These are the foods which are rich in fibre –- Beans. All beans are good, weather baked beans, beans like kidney beans or beans in salads.- Wholegrain and wholemeal. Skip white bread and pasta, look out for wholegrain and wholemeal on the labels.- Brown or wholegrain rice. White rice doesn't offer as much fibre.- Pulses. As well as beans, chickpeas and lentils are full of fibre. Try using whole dals than split ones as they give more fibre.- Nuts. Almonds, pecans, and walnuts have more fibre than other nuts.- Dried fruit. Like figs and dates are rich in fibre.- Bran based cereal and other healthy cereal options.- Porridge. Porridge is made from oats which are a great source of fibre.- Vegetable. All green leafy vegetables [spinach, methi, soya], beans [flat and round], lady finger, green peas are rich in fibre- Fruits. Raspberries, pears, apples, strawberries, chikku, banana are rich in fibre and these fruit should be eaten with the skin (except banana)2. Adequate water intakeWater is important to make the motion soft. So adequate amount of water should be consumed, neither more nor less. Will discuss about it in detail in some other blog. Just to give a rough estimation children [more than 2 yrs] need around 50 to 100ml /kg body weight of water.3. MedicationMedication has a role initially to relieve constipation and helps in setting up a routine of passing motion regularly. So discuss about it with a paediatrician.4. Proper positioning of the child while passing motionIf child is using western toilet then please make sure that his/her legs are properly supported on a stool instead of hanging mid air. This is important as this relaxes the child and helps in complete evacuation.

Best Way to Treat Constipation in Diabetes at Home

Dr. Nikhil Prabhu, Diabetologist
Majority of diabetic people suffer from constipation, irregular bowel movements, abdominal cramps, dyspepsia, etc. Uncontrolled diabetes or Hyperglycemia affects nerves that supplies gastro-intestinal tract and hampers peristalsis. This leads to stagnancy of food in gastrointestinal tract. Diabetes also affects the nerves which supplies pyloric sphincter, causing disturbances in its relaxation, which ultimately leads to delayed gastric emptying. Nerves supplying to antrum of stomach are also affected leading to improper crushing of food and accommodation of food in stomach. This finally leads to dyspepsia & constipation. Normally, food we eat reaches rectum in around 36 to 48 hrs. In diabetic person due to imbalance in gastric motility this time span gets further delayed.6 ways to treat constipation in Diabetes at homeYou can treat constipation in diabetes with following six ways :Increase Fibre in diet – There are two types of fibre in diet (insoluble & soluble). High fibre diet helps to form bulk of stool, also increases water content of stool, makes it soften so it can easily pass through gastro-intestinal tract. Cereals, whole grains, beansare reach in fibre content. Green leafy vegetables, Fruits like apples, pears, berries etc are good for diabetic people. Breakfast with oats helps to get good amount of fibre at the start of the day.Drink lots of water – If you do not drink good amount of water, body ultimately tries to take water from food you eat & making stools harder. If you are increasing fibre in diet then increase water consumption as well. Drink atleast 1.5 litre of water daily.Regular Exercise – Regular exercise is necessary for all diabetics. It not only helps in controlling blood sugars but also helps to pass food further in gastro-intestinal tract. Even a moderate amount of exercise in the form of brisk walking or cycling helps to prevent constipation.Natural Probiotics – Daily a cup of yoghurt or a glass of Chass helps to keep healthy intestinal bacterial flora leading to good digestion of food and preventing constipation.Laxatives – Laxatives can be of different types like bulk forming, Osmotic, Stool softeners, bowel stimulatory. etc. Isbgol Powder and castor oil are commonly used home made laxatives. It is advisable to consult your diabetes doctor before starting any laxatives.Last but not the least Excellent Blood Sugar control with diet, exercise and regular timely medication plays and important role in treating constipation in diabetes. Cause of constipation can vary from Nerve damage of GI tract due to long term poor management of diabetes to just simple lack of fibre in diet.Extreme cases of constipation like Fecal impaction more commonly affecting elderly and disabled bed ridden individuals requires enema or manual evacuation of hard stools by inserting one or two gloved fingers in anus. Those were the Natural ways of treating constipation in diabetes at home.If you like my article please share it with your friends and family.Awareness is prevention!

Is Your Baby Constipated ?

Dr. Kalpesh Onkar Patil, Pediatric Surgeon
Concerned about bowel function has been prevalent throughout history across many cultures. A normal bowel pattern is thought to be a sign of good health. Unfortunately, no uniform definition of childhood constipation is recognized. Moreover, healthcare providers have definitions of constipation that are very different from most parents' definitions.1) How frequent is the problem:-Constipation in children has reported prevalence rates between 1% and 30%.It is the principal complaint in 3-5% of all visits to pediatric outpatient clinics and as many as 35% of all visits to pediatric gastroenterologists.2) When is it called "Constipation":-The Paris Consensus on Childhood Constipation Terminology (PACCT) defines constipation as "a period of 8 weeks with at least 2 of the following symptoms: defecation frequency less than 3 times per week, fecal incontinence frequency greater than once per week, passage of large stools that clog the toilet, palpable abdominal or rectal fecal mass, stool withholding behavior, or painful defecation."3) How to deal with Constipation in Children:- Childhood constipation is treated in many ways, and virtually any therapeutic regimen is likely to be effective as long as it is sufficiently aggressive and persistent. Because of the medical profession's understanding of the patho physiology of the problem, the basic tenets of therapy include evacuation of the colon, elimination of pain with defecation, and establishing regular bowel habits.A group of patients with severe constipation that does not respond to conservative medical therapy requires more aggressive treatments, including surgery.4)  Diet:-Get educated about ideal feeds to baby, about constipating factors in foods, importance of daily water intake, importance of toilet training for your baby and how to set biological clock in their mind. YOUR FEW BASIC STEPS MAY CHANGE THEIR LIFE FOREVER"LET'S HELP THEM TOGETHER"

Bowel Motion After Food Is It Normal?? Why Am I Constipated?

Dr. Maruthesh Gowda, Bariatric Surgeon
Quite a lot of people seek help complaining of having to go to toilet immediately after food. They induce inself-medication to prevent it mostly in the form of acidity medications. They worry they have problem of absorption/digestion. While one simple answer is its not serious.Unless you loose weight significantly then there is no problem with absorption or digestion. If you observe children then you will get the solution. Most children, when they are small go to toilet immediately after food and as adults we tell its wrong and over the time they stop doing it.Sensation to go toilet after eating food is normal. Its called Gastro-Colic reflux. When one eats food and stomach gets distended sensation is sent to brain to let it know there is new food in stomach and its going to need space. Normally brain makes space by emptying any waste in the colon which is from the food consumed day before so it in-turn sends signal to colon to empty waste. But as adults we train our body to ignore the signal and wait for appropriate time and place, and with time it stops sending the signal unless its absolutely necessary. In people who are facing the problem the Gastro-Colic reflux is exacerbated that’s all and we need persistently retrain our body if we wish to do so.One can be assured the motion which goes out is never the food that was consumed few hours ago. Its waste from the food consumed day before. What are the remedies for constipation? For one pass motion normally one shouldEat enough fiber: This is readily available in all fruits, vegetables and green leaves. Drink at least 3 liters of water/ dayExercise: One should not expect their intestines to be mobile if they lack physical activity. Exercise does not mean gym it could be simple walking. One should avoid medicines till above three natural requirements are met. Only if you done all the above and still constipated then you should use medicines. It is best to avoid medicines as otherwise to open bowels you will need medicine and any long term usage of medicine is not recommeneded.
