High blood sugar or hyperglycaemia is spreading like a wildfire in metro populations. Due to changes in lifestyles and more reliance on ‘comfort food’, we are losing health to a disabling disease called diabetes. It is known to damage our peripheral nerves, eyes, kidney, and heart. Here are some ways we can prevent it:
Avoid sugar
Sugar should be avoided if you are susceptible to diabetes. Sweets do help release happy hormones into our body but they do more harm than good. As we grow old, insulin levels drop in our body and when it cannot deal with this, insulin resistance takes place and the person gets diabetes. Sugar products including sweetened beverages should be avoided.
Physical activity
Physical activity helps to deal with excessive blood glucose by utilising it. Exercising regularly helps your body to respond well to insulin, hence preventing insulin resistance. Exercising also helps to reverse any damage done to the body if you have diabetes. A 30-minute walk or cycling can prevent high blood sugar in long run.
Eat whole foods
Whole foods are the key to longevity. Whole foods are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and fibres which help in improving metabolism and avoid any systemic disease in the body. Add foods like whole grains, fruits, greens, and nuts in your diet.
Watch your medications
Many common drugs such as steroids, anti-asthmatic drugs and many painkillers are known to increase blood sugar. If you are taking any of these medications, consult your doctor about the doses and replacement of these medicines.
Most of all, no matter how well you are doing, it is important to go for regular checkups with your doctor.
