It was established on 15 August 1991 by the Maharaja Agrasen Hospital Charitable Trust, founded in 1980 by a group of donors with the objective of giving free medical aid to every deserving person irrespective of caste, creed and religion, and of setting up and running hospitals, dispensaries and medical institutions and training doctors, nurses and paramedical staff. The hospital is named after Maharaja Agrasen, a king of Agroha in Haryana. It opened with 65 beds in 1991. It functions on a no-profit, no-loss basis, supported by voluntary contributions from trust members and the general public, and the trust office bearers work honorarily without remuneration.Round-the-clock services cover imaging, laboratory, accident and emergency, and critical care ambulance. The radiology department has a 1.5 Tesla MRI used for whole-body screening, spectroscopy, angiography and CSF flow studies, a multislice CT scanner with pressure injector supporting CT-guided FNAC and angiography, 3-D and 4-D colour Doppler, a 3D mobile C-arm system, digital OPG, X-ray with CR system, an image intensifier, a bone densitometer and mammography. The automated laboratory covers histopathology, cytology, microbiology, serology, haematology and biochemistry, and the blood bank collects and processes whole blood and blood components, including plateletpheresis. Cardiovascular and coronary care includes angiography, angioplasty and bypass surgery. The labour room and neonatal nursery complex is equipped with monitors, ventilators and cardiac tocometers for high-risk pregnancies and deliveries, and an infertility centre provides IVF. The dialysis unit runs 30 machines across four shifts and carries out more than 2,000 dialysis sessions a month, offering haemodialysis, CAPD and CRRT. Listed specialities include orthopaedics and traumatology, with spine, knee, hand, and foot and ankle surgery, along with trauma surgery, internal medicine and cardiology.A free OPD offers specialist and superspecialist consultation to about 800 to 900 patients daily, and the casualty department provides free consultation along with minor procedures and first-aid medicines. Twenty per cent of beds are reserved for poor patients in the general ward, where consultation, medicines, surgical implants and diet are provided free. The hospital runs four mobile dispensaries serving about 400 to 500 patients daily in JJ clusters, and has carried out over 1,200 free cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries under the Smile Train project. The trust second project, an 80-bed multispeciality hospital at Dwarka, was announced as due for commissioning in early 2013.The hospital is open 24 hours, all seven days.
