Wisdom tooth extraction doubt
I recently got my left upper wisdom tooth extracted as I experienced severe sensitivity due to cavity formation. Previously I also had pain in the lower side and the dentist that I consulted before told me that there is infection and should remove both upper and lower teeth. But the doctor I consulted now for extraction told me that only upper tooth will be removed and lower one can removed if there is pain in future. But I don't want to go through the traumatizing experience over again. I just wanted to get it done for once but the doctor said just remove the upper one alone and keep monitoring the lower one after taking x-ray. I will attach the x-ray also for your reference. The other side also feels a bit sensitive now when I drink cold water. I am worried the other three will also become problematic even though they are not that impacted. Please tell me how to avoid another extraction?

Thank you for sharing your detailed concern — it’s completely valid to feel anxious about going through another extraction. Your decision to get only the upper wisdom tooth removed based on current symptoms is appropriate and aligned with conservative dental principles. ✅ Why your dentist suggested monitoring the lower tooth: Lower wisdom teeth, especially if impacted but asymptomatic, don’t always need immediate removal. Removing them preemptively can sometimes lead to more trauma than benefit unless there’s pain, infection, or damage to nearby teeth. ✅ What to watch for in the lower wisdom tooth: Swelling or pain in the gum behind it Food lodgement Difficulty opening mouth Bad breath or pus discharge ✅ About sensitivity on the other side: That could be early enamel wear or exposed dentin — not necessarily wisdom tooth-related. But let’s monitor that area, use desensitizing toothpaste, and reduce cold/sour food temporarily.
Next Steps
🔹 Get a full-mouth OPG (if not done yet) 🔹 Schedule a 6-monthly follow-up for clinical + radiographic evaluation 🔹 If lower wisdom tooth causes repeated problems, removal can be planned at the right time under proper anesthesia with minimal trauma
Health Tips
Keep wisdom tooth areas very clean with interdental brushes and warm saline rinses Avoid sticky/retentive food near partially erupted wisdom teeth Don’t ignore mild symptoms — treat early Regular dental visits every 6 months You're being proactive — that’s the best thing you can do to preserve your oral health. Extractions are avoidable if we detect and manage early.

Hello sir, If you have pain in both the wisdom teeth then go for extraction. And if u have pain only in your upper wisdom tooth you can opt for an extraction of that tooth but from an x ray I can see your lower impacted wisdom tooth is distoangular, (might be it has no space to erupt in the jaw ) which might cause pain in future. For now you can go for an  extraction of wisdom tooth which is causing you the pain.

See I can understand you don't want to go through such painful experience again, but if you have xray of the teeth which is giving you problem ,then I can see it and give you proper diagnosis. And what can be done and if the extraction can be avoided. If you have  sharp unbearable pain, then it's better to remove the wisdom teeth. But if there is no problem or symptoms of pain then It should not be removed. It's better to have detailed consultation on this matter ,with xray of the teeth that are giving you problem. We can do online consultation with xray. For proper diagnosis and proper treatment.
Next Steps
online consultation with xray of problematic teeth. which is having pain.

Hi! If there is no pain in the lower tooth, extraction may not be necessary. If possible, please show the X-ray of the upper tooth so we can better understand the condition. I would also advise getting an OPG done !

Hi, I suggest you need not remove the lower tooth unless you have pain. Visit the dentist for a check up every 6 months.
