Wisdom tooth pain not reducing
I have had all my wisdom teeth for a while but 5 days ago suddenly left bottom tooth started paining. I saw a dentist immediately and she gave me antibiotics and painkillers. Pain was so much I was only getting relief while on painkillers. She took an x ray the tooth was straight and not touching any others but the gum flap over the tooth seemed to be a problem. So after 3 days she did the surgery to remove the gum flap. Been 2 days since the surgery. The antibiotics course is over but I am still experiencing the same pain, so still taking the painkillers. How long till I get relief in pain so I can stop depedning on the painkillers ?

Hello, Based on your history and the X-ray, it appears you were suffering from pericoronitis due to the gum flap over a partially erupted wisdom tooth. Flap excision (operculectomy) can provide relief in selected cases, but it is normal to experience some pain and discomfort for 3–7 days after the procedure. Most patients notice significant improvement within 5–7 days, with complete healing taking around 2 weeks. Since it has only been 2 days after surgery, some pain is expected. Continue taking the prescribed medications exactly as advised, maintain excellent oral hygiene, and gently rinse with warm salt water (or use the mouthwash prescribed by your dentist) after 24 hours to keep the area clean. However, if your pain is not improving after 5–7 days, becomes more severe, or is associated with swelling, pus discharge, fever, difficulty opening the mouth, or difficulty swallowing, you should revisit your dentist promptly, as further evaluation may be required. Also, while the X-ray suggests the wisdom tooth is relatively upright, if the gum infection recurs repeatedly, removal of the wisdom tooth is generally considered the definitive treatment, as flap excision alone may not prevent future episodes in all cases. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Hello. When any tooth is covered by a thin layer of gums or gingival tissue then food particles get accumulated there and causes infection this condition is called pericoronitis. It causes severe pain in the back tooth region also because in wisdom tooth pericoronitis it is difficult to maintain good oral hygiene by tooth brushing as the tooth brush doesn't reach there and hence the infection. The definitive treatment of pericoronitis is extraction of third molar / wisdom tooth. As flap excision often causes recurrence of pericoronitis. It takes 5-10 days for the mucosa to heal.As of now you can maintain good oral hygiene complete your antibiotic course and do warm saline gargle 2-3 times a day for 5 days . Continue to brush your teeth twice daily using tooth paste and brush. And in case of severe inflammation and difficulty in mouth opening consult the treating  dentist.
Next Steps
maintain good oral hygiene. Do warm saline gargle 2-3 times a day for 5 days. apply mucopain gel of the tissues around the wisdom teeth. check blood sugar / check if you are diabetic or prediabetic/ HbA1C/ fasting blood glucose. elevated blood sugar can worsen infection and healing of tissues post surgery.
Health Tips
consult the treating dentist of symptoms do not subside in 3-4 days.
