Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician.
I understand your concern. Medical terms like curable and reversible are often used interchangeably, but they actually mean different things. This is why you may see confusing answers online.
â Difference Between the Two
⢠Curable â The disease is completely eliminated and will not come back once treated (example: tuberculosis after completing the full course of medicines).
⢠Reversible â The disease or damage can improve and return to normal if risk factors are corrected, but it can come back again if lifestyle is not maintained (example: fatty liver improving with weight loss, but returning if unhealthy habits resume).
Examples
⢠Fatty liver â It is reversible with weight loss, diet changes, and exercise. But it is not called âcurableâ because if you go back to old habits, fat can again accumulate in the liver.
⢠Hypertension â In most cases it is not curable, but in early stages (like in overweight young people) it can be reversible with weight loss, salt restriction, and exercise. Still, many people require long-term medicines.
⢠Infections like malaria or pneumonia â These are curable because with proper medicines the infection goes away completely.
When a disease is both
Some conditions can be reversible and curable depending on the stage:
⢠Type 2 diabetes in early stage â blood sugar may normalize with weight loss and lifestyle (reversible). If caught very early and sustained, some people can remain normal for long without medicines (functional cure).
⢠Vitamin deficiencies â low Vitamin D or B12 are reversible with supplements, and once corrected, they are also considered cured if levels stay normal.
ð In short:
⢠Curable = gone permanently after treatment
⢠Reversible = can improve and go back to normal, but can return again if risk factors come back
Every disease has its own nature â some are only manageable, some reversible, and some curable.
ð You can connect with me on Practo or WhatsApp at 85271646 seven seven if you want me to guide you case by case which of your conditions are reversible, curable, or need long-term control.
Take care, wishing you good health.

Hello, reversible is when you can get back to normal with treatment to an extent and mostly by lifestyle changes but once you start living unhealthy, the disease can return.
Curable disease is something that doesn't return after full course of treatment.

Reversible means, it can come back to normal, but not cured like hypertension, diabetes, etc.
Cured means it has become o.k. forever like typhoid fever.
Early Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is reversible with lifestyle change, but not curable because the metabolic dysfunction remains present as a risk.
Hypertension is reversible in early stages with weight loss and lifestyle control, but it is not considered “curable” because there is a tendency for it to come back unless those measures are permanently sustained.
hello, i understand your concern to keep in simple terms, both terms are synonyms , curable refers to disease which can be treated with proper medication or needed intervention but the scar remain itself , where reversible is similar in regular in which a wound any symptom which can be completely treated without any future occurence.

kindly explain which case or disease u want to know about these terms u can consult me through my profile
A fatty liver a condition is 100% reversible as well as curable, but once u take care of your self with taking regular medicine and diet control!! One other thing fatty liver is major complication by taking of too much alcohol!! So if u take then be careful... thank you
That’s a very good question. Many people get confused between the terms curable and reversible. Let me simplify it for you:
• Curable means the disease goes away completely with treatment and doesn’t come back. Example: pneumonia or dengue.
• Reversible means the changes in the body can return to normal if the cause is removed. Example: in early fatty liver, if you reduce weight and avoid alcohol, the liver can become normal again.
• Not curable but controllable are conditions where the tendency remains lifelong, but we can keep it under good control with medicines or lifestyle. Example: diabetes and hypertension.

Curable Diseases
A curable disease is one that can be completely eliminated from the body with proper treatment, leaving no trace of the disease.
Examples:
Bacterial infections (ex tuberculosis, syphilis, pneumonia).
Parasitic infections (ex malaria, giardiasis).
Peptic ulcer disease
Reversible Diseases
A reversible disease/condition means the damage or dysfunction caused by it can be reversed (partially or completely) if treated or managed early enough.
Examples:
Type 2 Diabetes (early stage) can be maintained healthy lifestyle and medication
Hypertension (early/functional) can normalize with lifestyle changes and medication.
Fatty liver (non-alcoholic, early stage) reversible with diet, exercise, alcohol avoidance.
Acute kidney injury (not chronic) kidney function may fully recover once the cause is corrected.
Depression/anxiety reversible with therapy/medication.
Asthma airway narrowing is reversible with treatment.
Health Tips
curable disease that can be eradicated
reversible disease that can be normal but chances of recursion is high based on severity of triggers
A curable disease is one where effective treatment leads to complete eradication of the disease, so it does not return and the person regains their prior health status.
Reversible diseases are those in which tissue or organ damage can be undone, allowing function to return to normal; if irreversible damage occurs, cure may not be possible
Next Steps
A reversible and curable disease is one in which the underlying pathological changes can be fully corrected, and the disease process can be eliminated, allowing a return to normal health without persistent symptoms or disability. For example, bacterial pneumonia is a reversible and curable disease because treatment with antibiotics can eradicate the bacteria, restore lung function, and prevent lasting damage if managed early and appropriately
The reversible and curable nature of any diseases depends on the severity of the diseases hence if we detect diseases like Diabetes or hypertension early it will be always beneficial.
.
It is a long discussion. Please spare some time and consult a General Physician in your city, sitting across the table.
(The time taken may be as much as the time taken for a lecture).
In simple words:
Curable = disease can be totally removed
Reversible = symptoms or effects can be undone and health returns to normal
Thank You
Next Steps
For curable diseases, the best approach is to follow the doctor’s instructions carefully, take all medicines as prescribed, and complete the treatment so the disease goes away fully.
For reversible diseases, living a healthy life with good food, regular exercise, and early care helps the body return to normal and regain strength

It is really confusing
Reversible means that all the effects of the disease are gone and you lead a normal life if you continue with the lifestyle changes and other regime.
Cure is entirely different. You are no longer having a disease despite not sticking to a lifestyle or regime.
Lots of apps and companies have come out with reversal of diabetes. It is a misnomer as prediabetics can be reversed with lifestyle changes and strict nutritional regime, but true diabetics can only be controlled.

Curable diseases are those that can be completely eradicated ( removed) following proper treatment and lifestyle changes
Example. - infections like infuenza, tuberculosis, other bacterial infections like typhoid , skin infections, infectious gastroenteritis
'Reversible' term is applied for those diseases that can be brought to normal or baseline level ( ie example - hyperthyroidism - can be maintained at normal bp by using tablets and lifestyle changes , sometimes the dose can be adjusted and brought to nil dose over a period of time - under the supervision of doctor
In this case the basic pathology of the disease still exist , but the symptoms and blood parameters can be brought under control following proper treatment and lifestyle changes

Hello sir,
A very valid doubt...
Please understand that not all the disease/condition occurs in our body can be completely cured. Sometimes damages which has happened would remain there and what's in our control is preventing further damage.
I'll explain it in a more easier way.
If you get a disease, you are asked to take medicines/undergo surgery for the same, after a particular duration, you no need to take anymore medicine.... That means the disease is 'cured'.
2nd, If you get a disease, and you are asked to take medicines for very long duration, sometimes for lifetime. This means, the disease is not curable, but can be controlled and maintained in body normal limits.
Eg for 1st: viral fever, appendicitis, dengue, etc
2nd: hypertension, diabetes, stroke, cancer, heart attack, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. These diseases can only be controlled from causing further damage.
