It's relatively uncommon for a 3.5-year-old to require a root canal treatment. Root canal procedures are typically performed on permanent teeth that have extensive decay or infection that has reached the pulp (innermost part) of the tooth. For primary (baby) teeth, dentists usually prioritize preserving the tooth whenever possible. In some cases, if a primary tooth is severely decayed or infected, the dentist might consider an extraction. However, there are alternatives to root canal treatment for baby teeth, such as: Pulpotomy: This is a procedure where only the infected pulp tissue is removed from the crown portion of the tooth. The remaining healthy pulp is left intact to maintain the tooth's vitality. A medicated filling is placed to protect the tooth. Extraction: If the decay or infection is extensive and cannot be treated with a pulpotomy, the tooth might need to be extracted. Baby teeth play an important role in guiding the eruption of permanent teeth, so extracting them too early might require space maintainers to prevent future orthodontic issues. Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF): This is a minimally invasive treatment that can be used to arrest the progression of tooth decay. It's applied to the affected tooth to help prevent further decay. Fluoride Treatment: Regular fluoride treatments can help strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay. It's important to have a thorough discussion with your dentist about the specific condition of your child's tooth, the reasons for recommending a root canal, and the available treatment options. If you're uncertain about the recommendation, seeking a second opinion from another qualified dentist might provide you with more clarity and confidence in the suggested course of action. Always prioritize your child's oral health and consult a dental professional for personalized advice.

If your child is having infection in tooth, than pulpectomy is needed. Do visit a local pedodontist for physical evaluation and treatment (as required)

If there’s an indication for RCT then there’s no other way to treat it. It’s a routine procedure and you don’t need to worry about it
Next Steps
Please get RCT done, if indicated. Don’t give medicines unnecessarily. (Particularly antibiotics)
