There are so many causes of calf pain it may be muscle strain ,arterial claudication , spinal stenosis ,compartment syndrome if she had any trauma or injury to the calf muscle ,it could be anything I mentioned so it’s better to consult a ortho, neurologist , physiotherapist for proper assessment.
Important to know if she has prolonged immobilization by surgery or any other cause, any flight travel, any breathlessness....These could cause a clot in her veins around the calf. If that is so, don't massage it. Instead take her to a vascular surgeon immediately.
But if not so consult an Orthopaedician.
Patients have a lot's of life style activities so one of the reason for loading , long period in one side of the body , best solution is Myofascial trigger point release then there applying ice bag
Next Steps
Take rest and maintain offloading weight one side of the body
Health Tips
Improve your core strength and constantly stretch your calf and other accessory muscles

Hi
Plz let her meet a good doctor
To rule out any DVT issues
Or it can be originating from the lumbar spine
It's important to get the right diagnosis
You can visit an orthopaedician
