My 1 year old son weighs only 7.5 kg. Our doctor has also raised concern about his weight gain. We’ve been advised to increase iron-rich foods in his diet and also start iron syrup.
The biggest challenge is that he simply refuses to eat. The moment he wakes up, he wants milk first,if I don’t feed him, he cries a lot. Because of this, I’m struggling to establish a proper meal routine, and he often refuses solids altogether.
The only positive thing is that he’s very active, playful, and meets his milestones well, but his weight is a constant worry for me.
I’m feeling really stressed and anxious about his eating habits and weight.
Please suggest if there's any underline issue related to it.
Bw - 2.27 kg
Preterm baby at 35 week.
Since he was preterm... that was the reason for impending growth faltering but to say so ... need child's anthropometry plus dont consider him 1 year his corrected age is 11 months ... feeding should be playful , let him play with food .. make it colorful , make it energy dense no screen time and fix utensils and fix timing ... u have to make some efforts eventually these children catch up at around 2 years of age and with good diet will reach his gene pool height ....
P.s Limit milk to 1.5 glass
Hope this helps 🙂

Hello
Your kid’s weight is on the lower side..The only reassuring part is he is active and playful.. but if this continues it will have an impact on growth at a later stage ..
As he is already 1 year old milk should be confined to 300-500 mL per day and that can be given as you wish but milk should not replace his meals..
Have a proper meal plan and you should be giving vegetables, whole fruits, eggs, meat ..do not give junk food and no screens during meals..
Continue iron syrup as advised..
Hello Parent , I understand ur concern on weight
But trust me parents should focus more on training mental activities more
If child is active and playfull you just wait till baby is hungry once the child is hungry you give small quantity of food ( Solid / Mashed food) with some Ghee
Since your baby was born at 35 weeks and weighed 2.27 kg, growth should be assessed using corrected age. A weight of 7.5 kg at 1 year is on the lower side but is not uncommon in preterm babies, especially if they are active, playful and meeting developmental milestones.
From your history, the main issue seems to be poor intake rather than an underlying disease. At this age, try to limit milk to about 400–500 mL/day, avoid giving milk just before meals, and offer 3 main meals + 2–3 nutritious snacks daily. Continue the iron syrup as advised, as iron deficiency itself can reduce appetite.
If weight gain remains poor despite improving calorie intake, your pediatrician may evaluate for causes such as anemia, thyroid problems, celiac disease, chronic infections, or feeding difficulties. Regular follow-up with weight plotting on a growth chart is important.
Please don’t blame yourself—many toddlers go through a phase of poor eating, and with the right feeding routine, most improve over time.
Greetings
Your son’s current weight of 7.5 kg is completely normal and expected for a baby born preterm at 35 weeks with a birth weight of 2.27 kg, as his growth should be tracked using his corrected age (about 11 months) on a specialized premature growth chart.High milk intake satisfies his hunger and displaces solid foods, which directly causes both his food refusal and the iron deficiency anemia your doctor is treating.Low iron levels biologically reduce a child's appetite, creating a difficult cycle where the anemia itself makes him refuse the very foods he needs to recover. To break this cycle, offer his iron syrup daily as prescribed, delay his morning milk by just 15 minutes to offer solids first, and limit his total daily milk intake to a maximum of 400–500 ml.His excellent energy levels and on-time developmental milestones are fantastic indicators that he is healthy, active, and mentally thriving despite his lower weight. An underlying medical issue is unlikely, but you should discuss ruling out sensory food aversions, silent reflux, or a urinary tract infection (UTI) with your pediatrician if food refusal persists after his iron levels improve.
Pls give more energy dense food made in ghee
Sabudana kheee khichadi sabudana tikki
Beet root halwa or beet root crushed in khichadi
Oats Daliya kheer with dry fruits
Adequate water intake
Banana papaya kiwi dragon fruit
Boiled potato fried
Sweet potato puree
If child is active, alert and healthy with normal developmental milestones stones ,there is no need to worry.however you can improve weight gain increasing food intake . Adopt family diet pattern . Give very less amount of top so that child will be able to take food .continue breast feeding .curd n can be included in the diet . Consider child as mini adult give food only 3times / like adult .day .make sure that child is passing stools everyday . Avoid junk food . Snacks can be given consider n seasonal fruits for this
