Hypothyroidism, what not to eat?
Many doctors have different opinions regarding what not to eat in hypothyroidism. I don't eat turnip, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale and soy products at all. Can someone please guide what to completely avoid eating in hypothyroidism?

Levothyroxine is a commonly prescribed thyroid hormone replacement medication. Intake of Coffee, soybean, Grapefruit juice, and papaya with this drug may interfere with the absorption and metabolism of the drug. if taken with drug without a gap.  Cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Bok Choy, Kale, Turnip, Collard Greens, and Brussel sprouts are restricted. Excess intake of cruciferous vegetables may induce or exacerbate hypothyroidism. So, it's better to take cruciferous vegetables in the cooked form in moderation. Avoid intake of raw cruciferous vegetables in excess.  Soya bean and its by-products such as Soy sauce, Tofu, Soya Chamb, Tempeh, and Soya milk may inhibit the action of the thyroid peroxidase is a critical enzyme required for thyroid hormone synthesis. It is suggested to boil soya before use and if your iodine intake is adequate then there is no harm in the consumption of soya and soya products. Iodine is essential for producing thyroid hormone within the thyroid follicular cell and requires adequate levels of circulating iodide taken in through the diet. Dietary sources of iodine are egg, Iodized salt, Marine Fish, and Strawberries. Iodine supplement intake without physician recommendations needs to be avoided as excess intake is also not beneficial for health.  Selenium is required for thyroid hormone metabolism. Dietary sources of Selenium are mustard, garlic, broccoli, Cereals, Grains, Organ Meats, and Seafood.

Hi,  Make sure your thyroid levels are checked regularly. You need to have your TSH checked after a thyroxine dose change.    Check your weight. In case of water retention, have natural diuretics such as lemon water, cucumber juice, zeera pani etc.          Physical activity is important, monitor your weight. Restrict food like turnip, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli , however, cooking inactivates the goitrogenic compounds found in these foods.            More than food lifestyle modification is also needed

Hello Please connect directly to discuss as primary hypothyroidism can be reversed, completely cured. Don't eat soya products. Cruciferous vegetables can be eaten in small portions as they are very nutritious.

Yes cruciferous vegetables interfere with the thyroid medicine.  That's why. But add vegetables juice of carrots, beetroot, tomatoes,  apples spinach and mint . Take 1tsp triphala powder at bedtime 3 to 4 days a week.

Hypothyroidism - Avoidances * Soya & soya products like Soya chunks, Soya milk, soyabean oil, Tofu (soyabean paneer), Edamame * Cruciferous veg. family like Cauliflower, cabbage, kale, turnip, Brussel sprouts, bokchoy etc. If taken, take in cooked form not in raw & salad form * Nuts like Pine nuts, peanuts, pearl millets * Fried & fatty food like Butter, fried stuff, red meat * Gluten like wheat, barley, rye * Refined items * Caffeine like tea, coffee, green tea. If taken, take in moderation. To be taken in Hypothyroidism - * Take whole grains like wheat, brown rice & oats * Brazil nuts * Fish like Salmon, sardines, mackerel * Chia seeds, flax seeds rich in Omega 3 * Spices like turmeric & ginger * Other sea food like oysters, shrimp etc.
