I am 23 yrs old Male. 90kg weight 172 cms height and BMI : 30. I have Hypothyroidism since childhood and have been taking medicine since 13 years.
Earlier I was 78kg but last year I gained 10kgs so my physician increased my dose from 50mcg to 75mcg.
I am currently on 75mcg Eltroxin and do regular thyroid profile checkup and everything is within normal range.
I try my best to decrease my weight but unable to do even after dietary changes and workout. I have never lost weight in my life and don't know to deal with this now?

Weight loss with hypothyroidism can be challenging due to a slow metabolism, but it is achievable with the right dietary choices, timing, and a consistent exercise routine.
- Include complex carbohydrates like brown rice, oats, jowar, bajra and avoid refined carbohydrates like white rice, biscuits, maida, white bread etc.
- Include protein-rich foods such as chicken, fish, beans, legumes, sattu, paneer, tofu as protein provides fullness and also helps in weight management.
- Avoid raw cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and limit soy, as both can affect thyroid function, always cook cruciferous vegetables before consumption.
- Combining resistance training with cardio like jogging, brisk walking, cycling which helps in fat loss and building muscle.
- Prioritize good sleep for hormonal balance and drink at least 2-2.5 liters of water daily. Consistency is key to seeing sustainable results.

If we go with rough calculations...your idial Weight should be 72 or 74kg..and you put on 10 to 14 kg extra.+thyroid issues. If you maintain thyroid alo g Weight loss than both problems will come down..mean there maximum chances for minimum thyroid medicine.may be 10/12mcg. Consult a good dietician

Thank you for sharing your journeyâit's not easy managing weight with hypothyroidism, and I hear your frustration.
At 172 cm and 90 kg, your BMI is 30, which classifies as obesity. With a long history of hypothyroidism, itâs true that metabolism can be slower, but since your thyroid levels are now normal with 75 mcg Eltroxin, thyroid alone is unlikely to be the sole reason for your weight gain.
Here are some key points to consider:
Weight loss with hypothyroidism is possibleâbut it requires a focused, science-backed plan beyond general "healthy eating."
You may be unintentionally underestimating calorie intake or overestimating activity. Tracking honestly for a few weeks (not forever) can offer insight.
Muscle mass mattersâhypothyroidism can reduce lean mass, so strength training 2â3x/week and adequate protein (1.2â1.5g/kg) are critical.
Hidden inflammation, insulin resistance, or sleep issues can block progress. These should be assessed and managed.
Next Steps
Youâve never lost weight because you likely havenât had a fully customized metabolic plan yet. Itâs not your faultâbut letâs change that.
Health Tips
Donât rely solely on thyroid dose changes for weight lossâthatâs not their function. Your current dose is maintaining hormone levels, but fat loss needs a separate strategy.
