Dear Doctor(s),
I have high bp and live in Canada. The doctor here has prescribed Amlodipine 5mg, once daily for 2-3 weeks.
Is this a safe medication?
Once started do I need to be on it permanently?
Can I avoid this and make life style changes only? BP is ranging between 130-150 / 80-90 pm an average.
Please guide as it is difficult to get sufficient doctor's time here in the west.
Thank you.

I assume your BP range you have mentioned here is with use of Amlodipine 5 mg .You didn't mention your BP prior to the Amlodipine.
Amlodipine is a proven antihypertensive with very few side effects notable among them is ankle edema
I suggest with 5 mg of Amlodipine change in your diet , life style and exercise will help you to keep blood pressure under check.
At home you can use upper arm digital bp apparatus to monitor your BP.
Next Steps
get your blood test including lipid profile, glucose levels, renal profile, liver function
Please don't ask such questions.
You are in Canada. If you have some problem due to hypertension are you going to consult your Doctor in Canada or consult me in India?
Please instil some wisdom and decorum into Medical Treatment.
Don’t try to skip or stop medication to check that your BP is ok, without your doctors consult no need to modify or stop the medicine. The effect of medicine in your body remains 3 to 5 days so if you skip or stop, your BP will be lower side for next 3 to 5 days.
Secondly I would like to suggest you that go for ambulatory BP monitoring to get the actual pressures.
Along with medications you have to follow healthy diet and some life style , this will also help to reduce your BP.
Next Steps
Continue same treatment.
1-Check your lipid profile and renal function test
2- Go for Echocardiography to rule out LVH
Yes it is a safe medicine to be taken once daily after breakfast.
Anti Hypertensive medications can help to control the BP surges
It is the smallest dose so if u can gofor some lifestyle interventions,You might get a better control over the Blood Pressure.
Next Steps
Less Dietary Salt/Brisk walk for 30-45mins daily
Less Carbonated Drinks
Less of Chicken and eggs,
Prefer mutton over Chicken.
Less Smoking and More sleep
Yeah it's safe.
