There are various phases of tooth development. As per the picture and the age mentioned by you, your child is now in the ugly duckling stage which means that the gap between the upper front teeth now seen is normal and a good sign that the process is going on well.
Next Steps
If the child is concerned for his esthetics and if there is a history of gaping between the teeth in your family, there is no harm in getting a OPG(Full mouth Xray done) and keep re visiting the Dentist who may provide with some dentofacial orthopedic treatment if there is a problem which is very beneficial at this age.
Health Tips
Apart from the gap issue you might keep a check on other habits of your child to get a non interrupted tooth development.

This us called as ugly duckling stage. The gap will be closed after canines erupt. If gaps dont close then visit dentist for orthodontic treatment at the age between 14-16.

He is still in his growing years and all his permanent teeth haven’t erupted yet. This is a natural tendency in some kids. I would suggest to wait until another year sometimes the erupting permanent teeth use such spaces to erupt which closes them. In case even after a year or so the gap still remains we will evaluate him and the ultimate treatment would be braces.
Next Steps
Wait for another year so that more permanent teeth are erupted in the mouth
Health Tips
In case the child is disturbed with the gap we can treat just the gap for now and bind it with a retainer and then after all the permanent teeth erupt we can go for full fledged braces treatment.
