Depressed mood
My sister is having low mood since past few days. She complains of crying without any reason. She also had complaints of not being able to sleep about 15 days back which has now improved but still not getting proper sleep and sleeps very less. She is newly admitted to College 2mnths back and stays in hostel. There is no kind of academic stress (apart from very hectic schedule). No complaints of loneliness as she has made friends there. And none other reason of stress that we could identify. We have asked her not to stay alone for long and just be with friends but it has not helped much and she cries for no reason when alone. Should we consult a psychiatrist or there is anything else we could do to lift her mood up.

Hi, I am sorry you have to go through this. I am sure this is tough for your sister and all of you in the family. It looks to me that she has some trauma stored in her subconscious mind which has gotten triggered. The trigger is causing her to cry and feel the emotions which she hasn’t felt before when that event occurred. This is totally normal and the going away from home has triggered it. I am not sure lifting the mods or anything external could help her because it would be temporary. We need some internal healing for her to be done in the form of therapy and release. You’re brave. Stay
Next Steps
I can work on her subconscious trauma release and help her to move forward. Love and healing ❤️‍

Hi It seems like something is bothering your sister. You can ask her if she is upset about something. Since fifteen days she is not able to sleep well. It seems like your sister could be going through something. You can encourage her to share her thoughts and feelings. If she is not able to talk about what is bothering her with you encourage her to seek professional help. She can consult a psychologist. Based on the severity of symptoms a psychologist will determine if psychiatric help would be needed. I understand you are worried about your sister. Do not worry just showing support and being there for her will help her feel better. It is important for you to feel calm and take care of yourself.
Next Steps
Consult a psychologist

I agree with Ms Seal's and Mr Maithil's response. In addition, as there is a problem adjusting to a new environment, it also could be a problem of letting go of the old environment. Either way, it could be signs of adjustment disorder, but we would need more information. She has been strong and managing herself despite the crying spells and whatever the problem is, am sure she will be out of it if taken the right steps for addressing it. Psychiatrists prescribe medicines and psychologists provide counselling. Counselling has no side effects, unlike drugs/medicines.
Next Steps
counselling session
Health Tips
please remain in touch with your sister and ask about her wellbeing/ what's bothering her/ will she be open to take 1 or 2 counselling sessions online? please share that everyone takes counselling at different points in life, it is a support system.

Your sister might be showing symptoms of depression however a Clinical assessment is needed to come into a valid diagnosis. There might be an aggravated event in such scenario, since she moved in to a new college so that means there is a change in the environment. At times we don't get valid information from near and dear ones but we do get is from the patient. Ask her how she felt in the new college, was there any other problem she dealing with such as adjustment.
Next Steps
The next step is to consult a psychiatrist for medication and consult a clinical Psychologist to start her therapy
Health Tips
As of now her sleep is the utmost priority. At times lack of sleep also can affect or mood. Sleep hygiene is needed.

Hello. I'm glad that you've reached out to help your sister. A good support system is also very beneficial. Sometimes it takes us time to adjust to new changes and an obvious external stressor may not be the only culprit. Talking to someone especially a professional would be really beneficial.
Next Steps
You can ask your sister to talk to a psychologist (if there is one at her college or outside).

Hi... It seems she has repressed something long back or may be recently which is now coming out in the form of these bouts of sadness, crying, sleep issues, etc. It may be triggered by the new environment (college/hostel/city) but the root may lie elsewhere. This needs to be addressed psychologically first to identify the root cause. Consulting a Psychiatrist can be done but it will help by introducing medication (antidepressant, antianxiety, etc.). I would suggest you to consult a Psychologist first and then a Psychiatrist, if required.
Next Steps
Consult a Psychologist first and a Psychiatrist later. CBT along with Lifestyle Changes and Interpersonal Guidance and Counselling is required.
