Yes — if you have active chickenpox, it’s not advisable to use a salicylic acid face wash (or any exfoliating/acidic product). Here are some possible problems: 1. Irritation and burning: Salicylic acid can sting or irritate open chickenpox blisters or scabs. 2. Delayed healing: It may interfere with the skin’s natural healing, increasing risk of scarring. 3. Secondary infection risk: Damaged skin is more prone to bacterial infection when exposed to chemical agents. 4. Allergic or sensitivity reaction: During viral eruptions, skin is hypersensitive — you may develop redness, rash, or itching even if you tolerated salicylic acid before.
Next Steps
What to do instead: Gently cleanse with plain water or a mild, fragrance-free cleanser (like Cetaphil or baby soap). Avoid any scrubs, acids, or alcohol-based products. Keep lesions clean, cool, and dry. Use calamine lotion or any soothing lotion your doctor recommends.
Health Tips
Once all lesions have completely healed, you can safely restart salicylic acid if needed.

Do not use any facewash or ointment over active lesion. You may apply them after the active phase is over, i.e. 2 to 3 days before onset of rash till 14 days after the rash onset.
Next Steps
Isolate yourself from other members of family, as it is highly contagious.

Hello, I understand your concern and you're right to be careful while dealing with active chickenpox. Is salicylic acid face wash harmful during active chickenpox? Yes, using products like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, scrubs, or any exfoliating or harsh cleansers during active chickenpox is not recommended. These products can: Irritate the skin and worsen itching Damage the delicate blisters Increase the risk of scarring or secondary infection Delay healing What you should do now: Stop using salicylic acid immediately Wash your face with plain water or a very mild, fragrance-free cleanser Avoid touching or scratching the lesions Apply soothing calamine lotion or prescribed antiviral ointments if suggested by your doctor When to seek help urgently: If you notice: Burning sensation Increased redness or pus formation Severe itching New rashes appearing rapidly Fever or headache worsening These may indicate irritation or infection and require prompt treatment. For a quick recovery and scar prevention guidance: Chickenpox can leave permanent facial marks if not handled properly. I can guide you personally on the right skincare routine, medications, and diet to speed up healing and prevent marks. Avoid using these face washes till your pox wounds start crusting and falling. They will be harsh on the face and can cause irritation, burning and itching like symptoms.
